Brewery news Germany: Eichbaum brewery rescued by investors amid restructure
The insolvent Eichbaum brewery in Mannheim is set to continue operations after creditors approved a rescue plan backed by two investors, marking a decisive step to secure the future of one of Germany’s traditional breweries, Inside.Beer reported on March 27.

According to SWR and INSIDE Getränke, a financial investor — reportedly Lafayette Mittelstand Capital Fund Manager — will take over key brand rights and provide financial backing, while Park & Bellheimer, a brewery group based in Pirmasens, will assume responsibility for distribution and the domestic business. This structure clearly separates brand ownership from commercial execution, reflecting a growing trend in restructuring cases within the brewing sector.

Lafayette is an independent private equity investor founded in 2009 that focuses on "Mittelstand" (medium-sized) companies in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) undergoing special situations like carve-outs or turnarounds. It is headquartered in Munsbach, Luxembourg, with an office in Frankfurt, Germany.

As part of the agreement, Roald Pauli, former CFO of Eichbaum and now majority shareholder of Park & Bellheimer, is playing a central role in the transaction. According to INSIDE Getränke, Pauli facilitated the deal by waiving significant historical claims — reportedly in the double-digit million euro range — linked to earlier legal ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev launches Modelo Especial in the UK
The Mexican lager brand Modelo Especial has just been introduced into the UK by its owner AB InBev via its UK distribution arm Budweiser Brewing Group (BBG), The Drinks Business reported on April 7.

Modelo Especial has launched into both the UK on-trade in draught format and the off-trade in bottles and cans in a big way from this month. Its appearance, as it casually appears alongside other brands within “the ultra-premium segment,” has been positioned by AB InBev to “drive incremental sales” following a test of the marketplace last October across “All Bar One sites and in Tesco” stores, db has learned.

AB InBev has described Modelo Especial as “a golden, refreshing lager that has been brewed for more than 100 years with carefully selected premium Mexican ingredients”. The beer giant has also flagged that it was “first crafted in 1925 with fire-roasted malts, it delivers a distinct, yet accessible high-quality taste that continues to honour Mexico’s rich heritage”. Indeed, the marketing cues are all pointing towards quality and heritage and the company has also confirmed that, in bars, the beer will be served in “the brand’s distinctive, refined glassware with golden design” while in off licences and supermarkets Modelo Especial’s ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Oettinger appoints new CEO following departure of Stefan Blaschak
Oettinger has finalized its new management structure following departure of former CEO Stefan Blaschak, who left the company around three months ahead of schedule. As previously reported, his tenure had already been approaching its planned conclusion, with responsibilities gradually being redistributed as part of a broader leadership restructuring. According to inside Getränke, Thilo R. Pomykala has taken over the role of CEO as of April 2026, acting as the central representative of the company internally and externally, Inside.Beer reported on April 1.

In his new position, Pomykala is responsible for marketing, sales, product development, and logistics. He brings decades of experience in the FMCG sector, including leadership roles at Hochwald Foods, where he spent more than six years as managing director, as well as previous positions at Unilever, Underberg, Meggle, and Hochland.

Alongside him, Pia Kollmar, owner and Managing Director responsible for finance, strategy, and procurement, remains a key figure in the leadership team. She had already reassumed a more direct management role earlier in 2026.

The third member of the management board is Dominika Steinberg, who has been with the company since 2015. Previously heading HR and IT, she now additionally oversees production and technical operations, completing the executive team.

The restructuring follows ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Scottish barley growers hit by slump in demand for whisky
Scottish arable farmers are encountering significant challenges in securing malting barley contracts for the 2026 harvest, a situation marking a departure from the historical stability of this crucial cropping rotation. The prevailing uncertainty is largely driven by evolving market dynamics, many of which are beyond the direct influence of growers, Lardermag.co.uk reported on April 6.

At the core of the issue is a notable reduction in demand from distilleries, primarily due to a decline in global alcohol consumption, particularly whisky and other spirits. This decreased consumer appetite is now having a palpable effect throughout the supply chain, reaching the farm gate. Many maltsters are indicating lower intake requirements for the upcoming season, with some delaying contract offers entirely.

Adding to the pressure, the previous season was marred by quality control issues, including unusually high levels of ‘skinnings’ – where the barley husk detaches during harvest or handling. This led to inconsistent malt performance and increased rejection rates from maltsters, resulting in deductions and financial strain for growers.

Despite these domestic headwinds, the wider Scotch whisky industry received a boost recently with China’s decision to halve its import tariff on Scotch whisky to 5%. This change, effective from early February 2026, is estimated to ...More info on site
