Brewery news Japan: March beer sales fall by 29% in Japan
Sales of beer and quasi-beer products in Japan in March fell an estimated 29 pct from a year earlier in volume terms, according to data released by four major brewers on April 10, Jiji Press reported.

The slump came after a year-before rise that reflected a last-minute demand surge ahead of industry-wide price hikes that took effect in April 2025.

Last month, beer and quasi-beer sales declined 31 pct for household consumption and 23 pct for commercial use.

By product type, sales of beer fell 23 pct, and those of "happoshu" quasi-beer products dropped 28 pct.

Sales of "third-segment" beer-like alcoholic beverages declined a steeper 41 pct, as they are relatively inexpensive and sensitive to price changes.

Brewery news Kenya: Kenya court dismisses bid to stop Diageo's sale of East African Breweries
A Kenyan court on April 9 dismissed a bid to stop Diageo's $2.3 billion sale of its local subsidiary East African Breweries Limited (EABL) to Japan's Asahi Holdings, Reuters reported.

London-listed Diageo, maker of Johnnie Walker whisky and Captain Morgan rum, said in December it had agreed to sell its 65% stake in EABL to the Japanese brewer, as it implements a turnaround strategy to reduce debt and revive growth.

But the deal soon ran into uncertainty after Kenyan beer distributor Bia Tosha petitioned the High Court to block the deal in January over pending litigation dating back to 2016.

The court rejected the bid, paving the way for the completion of the deal, which is set to be one of the country's biggest such transactions.

"The petitioner's notice of motion dated 5th January 2026 is hereby dismissed," said Bahati Mwamuye, a High Court judge, adding that any other orders that could impede the completion of the deal were all lifted.

EABL welcomed the ruling and pledged to prove its case in the underlying dispute, which revolves around a claim of unfair termination of distribution rights.

Diageo's sale of assets such as EABL is seen as key to the group's strategy under new CEO Dave Lewis ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Federation of European Businesses in India asks for exemption from import duty on glass bottles and cans
Perno Ricard, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Heineken and Carlsberg were among the alcohol companies part of a European lobby requesting the Centre for an exemption from a 10% import duty imposed on glass bottles and cans, according to a Reuters report on April 9.

The lobby, named 'The Federation of European Businesses in India' reached out to the government on April 2 saying that they were facing a supply crunch on glass bottles and cans as local manufacturers were unable to work at peak efficiency.

The lobby sent a letter that drew attention to the problems India's alcohol market (worth $65 billion) is facing, which is facing ramping costs with regards to glass bottles, cartons and labels due to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Passing this expense on to consumers is challenging in India due to retail price changes need government approval in two-thirds of India's states.

The alcohol industry is also seeing a 15% uptick in expenses owing to higher raw material prices such as cartons and adhesives. The industry is set to grow 8% a year until 2033, according to Coherent Market Insights data sited by Reuters.

The Brewers Association of India stated that beer firms have already requested states to increases ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Efes Pilsener now brewed under licence in Kent
Efes has become the latest world lager to shift production to the UK, The Grocer reported on April 8.

In order to support a push into mainstream grocery, production of Efes Pilsener has moved to Curious Brewery in Kent, where it is being brewed under licence by Sunrise Beverages.

The locally produced brew has landed in Tesco in a 660ml bottle (retail sale price: £3), a 4x440ml can multipack (retail sale price: £7), and a 10x330ml can multipack (retail sale price: £13). It carries the same 5% abv as the Efes brewed overseas.

The listing marked the first time Efes – first brewed in Türkiye in 1969 and now sold in over 50 countries globally – would be available to British shoppers “on a national scale”, Sunrise Beverages said.

Since winning the UK licence for Efes in January 2025, Sunrise has invested in building the brand across the on-trade, where it is now listed in hospitality groups including Comptoir Libanais, Portobello Pubco and Brother Marcus.

“Efes has been building genuine momentum on draught across the on-trade for over a year, and we know from the data that consumers love it wherever they find it,” said Sunrise Beverages CEO Richard Mather. “This listing with Tesco gives ...More info on site
