Brewery news USA: AB InBev announces new investment in Williamsburg brewery
Anheuser-Busch InBev, a leading American manufacturer and maker of Michelob ULTRA, Busch Light, Budweiser, and Bud Light, announced on May 21 a new $5.8 million investment in its Williamsburg, Virginia Brewery, The Financial Times reported.

The investment will help fuel production of Michelob ULTRA, the nation's #1 top-selling and fastest-growing beer and fund the creation of a new technical skills training center in Williamsburg to support the next generation of manufacturing professionals in Virginia.

This latest investment in Williamsburg is part of Anheuser-Busch's ongoing Brewing Futures initiative, through which the company is investing $600 million in its U.S. operations across 2025 and 2026. The initiative builds on Anheuser-Busch's commitment to investing in its people, breweries, and communities by creating and sustaining manufacturing jobs, building the manufacturing workforce for the future, and strengthening manufacturing career opportunities for veterans.

Brendan Whitworth, CEO, Anheuser-Buschsaid: "This investment in our Williamsburg Brewery allows us to continue producing the highest-quality, American beers we have crafted for generations, while supporting jobs and economic growth in the communities where we operate. By continuing to invest in places like Williamsburg, we reaffirm our longstanding commitment to the future of American manufacturing and to supporting veterans."

Brewery news World: Heineken preparing itself for CEO departure, replacement yet to be found
Heineken is preparing itself for life without Dolf van den Brink next month, although a replacement for the departing CEO has yet to be found, Global Drinks Intel reported on May 22.

Van den Brink, who has been with the brewer since 1998, when he started as a management trainee, will step away altogether next week. The executive notified Heineken in January of his intention to bring his six years as CEO to a close at the end of May.

The decision was timed to coincide with the commencement of the group’s next five-year plan, ‘Evergreen 2030’.

In an update today (22 May), Heineken said the search for a replacement has not concluded yet. “The selection process for Dolf’s successor is progressing well and is expected to be completed in the near term,” said the chair of Heineken’s supervisory board, Peter Wennink. “Up until then, any external commentary remains speculative.”

The company also said it has no intention of appointing an “interim CEO”, adding that “the supervisory board remains closely engaged and available to the executive team and the business, ensuring ongoing support and oversight”.

In results from the three months to the end of March, which were announced in late April, Heineken booked a ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Heineken targets Brazil’s premium beer segment with low-calorie label
Heineken has intensified competition for consumers in Brazil’s premium beer segment—currently the industry’s most coveted category—with the launch of a new product line, Heineken Ultimate. The group selected Brazil for the debut of the new label, which contains 97 calories—30% fewer than the regular version—is gluten-free, and has 3.5% alcohol content, Valor International reported on May 19.

The launch comes amid an escalating battle in the premium segment with its main rival, Ambev. Since the third quarter of last year, Ambev has claimed to have regained leadership in Brazil’s premium beer segment after a decade. Heineken, however, disputes that leadership and points to what it describes as a price war, especially involving the Original label.

“This is a historic moment for the group in Brazil and involves the brand that brought us to where we are today. We are bringing major innovation to continue leading the development of this category in the country,” Maurício Giamellaro, CEO of Heineken in Brazil, told Valor.

According to Giamellaro, Brazil was chosen for the product’s debut because of the strength of the local market. The country is currently the largest market by volume for both the Heineken and Amstel brands. Heineken entered Brazil in May 2010 after ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: German court orders deposit on border beer cans
A regional administrative court in Schleswig has ruled that shoppers from Scandinavia must also pay Germany’s deposit on single-use beverage cans in stores along the German-Danish border, a decision that could affect a long-running cross-border trade model built around low-tax beer and soft drinks, Vinetur reported on May 20.

The court said the deposit requirement does not violate Germany’s constitution or European law and applies in border shops just as it does elsewhere in the country. An exception, the judges said, exists only for direct exports of single-use beverage packaging. That means the practice of letting mostly Danish customers sign export declarations saying they will consume the drinks outside Germany cannot be used to avoid the deposit, because the goods are still being sold to end consumers and those declarations cannot be effectively checked.

The ruling is not yet final. The Schleswig-Flensburg district, which had been sued by the German Environmental Aid group, or DUH, can appeal to the Higher Administrative Court within one month.

DUH filed its lawsuit in April 2021 after the district did not act on a request from January 2021 to stop what the group said was a violation of Germany’s packaging law. The organization argued that border shops ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg to launch Chinese ChongQing beer in Malaysia
Carlsberg's Malaysian arm is set to launch ChongQing beer amid rising local interest in “authentic Chinese brands”, MSN reported on May 21.

In a statement, the group said it will roll out the “easy‑drinking lager” and brew it locally in Shah Alam.

Carlsberg Malaysia supply chain director Roger Li said: “Having started my brewing journey with ChongQing beer in its home city, I am incredibly proud to now brew this iconic beer here in Shah Alam, Malaysia.

“What matters most to us is staying true to its original character – refreshing, smooth, and easy‑drinking, so the flavours remain familiar to those who know ChongQing.”

ChongQing beer, named after its city of origin in China, was first brewed in 1958.

Carlsberg will sell the beer brand in Malaysia in 490ml cans at 3.8% abv. It says the brand is "well suited for long meals and relaxed social occasions”.

ChongQing beer will be made available at 99 Speedmart outlets nationwide from next month.

Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini said: “As Malaysian beer consumers show growing interest in authentic Chinese brands, this shift reflects more than a passing trend.

“The increasing appreciation for Chinese food, culture, and lifestyle points to a broader evolution in consumer behaviour.

“We are confident in making ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Malting and feed barley exports down in March as compared to February
Australia exported 1,357,312 tonnes of barley and 366,985t of sorghum in March, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The barley figures comprises 1,039,200t of feed and 318,112t of malting, with China the market for 80pc of the feed barley shipped, and 84pc of the malting.

Saudi Arabia was once again the second-biggest market for feed barley, with 112,177t shipped in March, followed by Qatar on 22,050t.

On malting, Peru on 22,000t and South Korea on 13,680t were the second and third-biggest markets respectively.

Total feed and malting barley figures for March were both down from the February total, feed by 9pc and malting by 14pc.

In contrast, March sorghum exports were close to double the February figure to indicate bulk hatches and containers filling with new-crop volume from the southern Queensland and northern New South Wales harvest.

McDonald Pelz senior broker Sam Roache said barley exports drifted slightly from the record month in March, while still posting a historically high 1.36Mt, driven by very strong Chinese demand and supplemented by Middle Eastern buying of feed and consistent South American demand on malting.

“April stems are pointing to a similar volume month, before a sharp drop off in May-June forward,” Mr Roache said.

“Stems ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & India: UK's Scotch whisky body hopes for 'swift' India FTA implementation
The UK's Scotch Whisky Association, which has projected significant exports to India over the coming years, has expressed hopes for the "swift" implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the Economic Times reported on May 19.

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed off during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UK visit last July and has progressed through the UK parliamentary ratification process this year.

However, last week it emerged that the operationalisation of the agreement has hit some hurdles over the UK's upcoming steel import restrictions.

"Positive trading relationships with established and emerging markets around the world are the bedrock of Scotch whisky's success, and over the past year the Free Trade Agreement with India, tariff reduction in China, and the announcement of zero tariff rate for the US, have been good news for producers looking to boost exports," said Mark Kent, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), ahead of a Downing Street event in London on Monday.

"We are grateful for UK government support and hope to see swift implementation of the India and US deals, as well as securing new international opportunities," he said.

It came as Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal told reporters last week that the UK's ...More info on site
