Brewery news UK: Fruit beer and stout drive UK’s on-trade beer growth
There has been a ‘fundamental’ shift in the UK’s on-trade consumers’ behaviour, with a move away from traditional higher-volume sessions to a more ‘intentional’ style of drinking, The Scottish Licence Trade News reported on May 27.

That is according to Heineken, which has just released its comprehensive 2026 Beer Report, subtitled ‘Elevating Experiences to Unlock Growth’.

In it, the brewing giant concludes that consumers are not simply going out to drink any more – instead “they are going out to connect, to be entertained and to enjoy an environment that feels distinct from home”.

So while average serves per visit have declined by nearly 9%, the average price per pint has risen by 8% to £5.02 as consumers trade up for premium quality and unique experiences.

The result is that, despite an overall reduction in volume, UK beer category in the on-trade has grown to a record £14bn in value, now accounting for nearly half (45%) of total wet sales in pubs, bars and restaurants.

Heineken’s on-trade director, Will Rice said: “Beer remains one of the great constants of the British on-trade but the way it creates value is changing.

“For licensees, the opportunity in 2026 is not simply to sell more beer, but to sell ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands: Brewers expand into soft drinks as beer sales decline
Breweries in Amsterdam-Noord and across Europe are expanding into soft drinks and alcohol-free beverages as beer consumption continues to fall, a shift driven by health concerns, rising taxes, and changing consumer preferences, industry reports and analysts say, NL Times reported on May 29.

In Amsterdam-Noord, the brewery Oedipus Brewing, now owned by Heineken since 2023 and relocated about two years ago, a few hundred meters from its former site, is moving beyond beer production. Known for specialty beers such as Mannenliefde and Gaia, the company now also produces soft drinks under the brand Club Canette, RTL reports. The ambition, according to Oedipus director Frederik van Droffelaar, is broader distribution.

The strategy reflects a wider industry shift. Beer market analyst Francois Sonneville told RTL that breweries that once focused narrowly on beer brands have increasingly diversified. About 25 years ago, companies such as Heineken sold off non-core activities to concentrate on beer and expansion into emerging markets. That model remained successful for years, he said.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a decline in beer consumption. Although there was some recovery afterward, Sonneville said the downward trend has continued in recent years.

Structural changes are also visible in the Dutch brewing sector. Nearly 40 breweries disappeared ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Thailand revises alcohol sales regulations extending sales hours in certain locations
Thailand has revised its alcohol sales regulations, allowing sales from 11am to midnight in certain locations under a new announcement published in the Royal Gazette yesterday, May 28. The updated rules take effect today, May 29, and replace the previous 2025 regulation.

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee issued the announcement, titled Announcement on Prohibited Alcohol Sales Hours B.E. 2569 (2026), citing the need to update the existing regulation to reflect current circumstances.

The measure was issued under Sections 16(3) and 28 of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act B.E. 2551 (2008), as amended by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act (No. 2) B.E. 2568 (2025).

Under the new regulation, alcohol sales remain prohibited outside the period of 11am to midnight, except in specified cases.

Exemptions apply to alcohol sales in international airport passenger terminals serving international flights.

Sales are also permitted in entertainment venues operating within opening and closing hours allowed under the Entertainment Places Act, as well as hotels operating under the Hotel Act.

Additional exemptions cover designated alcohol sales areas within venues hosting conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs, performances or similar events.

The regulation also permits sales at food and beverage establishments located within entertainment venue zones established under the Royal Decree on Areas Permitted for Entertainment Venues ...More info on site

Hops news World: Carlsberg unveils the most detailed genetic map of hops ever produced
Carlsberg has unveiled what it claims is the most detailed genetic map of hops ever produced, in a move aimed at helping brewers and growers tackle the growing impact of climate change on beer production, the Asian Trader reported on May 27.

Scientists at the Carlsberg Research Laboratory said the breakthrough could support the development of more climate-resilient hop varieties while also opening up opportunities for new flavours and faster breeding innovation. The findings have been published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

The brewer said rising temperatures, drought and increasingly unpredictable weather were already affecting hop yields and quality in key growing regions, putting pressure on the supply of one of beer’s essential ingredients.

Researchers created a high-resolution genetic map of a commercially important hop variety, providing what the company described as an unprecedented insight into the crop’s genetic complexity and inheritance patterns.

Birgitte Skadhauge, vice president and head of the Carlsberg Research Laboratory, said the research was being openly shared to support the wider brewing and agricultural sectors.

“Challenges like climate change are bigger than any one company,” she said. “By sharing our hop genome research in Nature Communications, we are giving scientists and breeders everywhere tools to protect crops, to innovate, and ...More info on site
