Brewery news USA: U.S. breweries pushing mid-strength beer again
U.S. breweries are again pushing mid-strength beer, a segment generally defined at about 4% to 5% alcohol by volume, as they look for growth between traditional light beer and the fast-rising non-alcoholic category, Vinetur reported on June 23.

The shift reflects a new turn in the beer market after years in which many American craft brewers favored stronger styles. Joshua M. Bernstein, writing in SevenFifty Daily, said that about 15 years ago brewers split in two directions, with some going lower in alcohol while others moved higher. He pointed to Founders All Day IPA, bottled at 4.7% ABV, as a key product in that change, saying it helped turn IPA into a more casual daytime drink and effectively created the session IPA category in the United States. He said it remains the brewery’s best-selling beer.

Brewers now appear to be revisiting that middle ground as moderation becomes a stronger consumer theme. Chuck Buckingham, chief marketing officer at Mahou, said the “pendulum feels like it’s swinging even further now,” describing renewed interest in lower-alcohol styles.

Bernstein said mid-strength beer has long been central to drinking culture in countries including the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Australia, where governments encourage lower-alcohol production by taxing stronger beers ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia & Japan: Japan overtakes Mexico as main source of international beer across Australia
Japan has officially overtaken Mexico as the main source of international beer across Australia, according to tracking data. The Drinks Business (db) looks at how the sector is adapting.

The shift, which was outlined in the Endeavour Group’s State of Hops Report, has revealed that the beer available in Australia is inching closer to Japanese options and more international styles.

As such, the premium import market is undergoing what local reports are calling “intense structural change” as international brewing trends have started to reshape consumer beer buying habits.

The data reveals that premium international options consistently outperform standard domestic value macros in urban hubs and, although Mexico still retains a foothold across the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia, there is purportedly a push towards brands like Four Pines Japanese Lager which has been seen to be gaining ground.

With these shifting volume trends, independent breweries across Australia are said to be “moving quickly to counter them”. According to a deep dive into the situation, a recent Man of Many report highlighted that the craft segment in Australia has started “introducing domestic interpretations of global styles” in the hope of “satisfying consumers’ appetite for international identities while keeping logistics and production localised”.

Brewery news Germany: One of Germany’s oldest breweries Hofbrauhaus Wolters files for bankruptcy
Hofbrauhaus Wolters, one of Germany's oldest breweries, has filed for bankruptcy, citing soaring operating costs and a sharp decline in beer consumption, IOL reported on June 24.

Founded in 1627, the brewery has entered self-administration insolvency proceedings, allowing current management to remain in place while a court-appointed administrator oversees its restructuring. The company said it plans to shift its focus towards producing non-alcoholic beverages.

The brewery attributed its financial difficulties to rising operating costs and a nationwide decline in beer consumption, which fell to a record low in 2025. According to the Braunschweiger Zeitung, soaring energy prices have placed additional pressure on German breweries.

Germany's economy has faced sustained pressure from high energy costs since the government began reducing its reliance on Russian oil and gas imports following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. More recently, higher global oil prices linked to the conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran have added to cost pressures.

Germany entered recessions in 2023 and 2024 before recording near-stagnant growth in 2025. Economic growth is forecast at about 0.5% this year. Many German manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz and BMW, have reported challenges linked to higher energy costs and weaker demand.

At the same time, the German government has ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & USA: Scotland targets U.S. growth for whisky and premium food exports
Scotland has published a sector report for food and drink as part of its U.S. export plan, outlining opportunities for exporters and underscoring the importance of the American market for premium Scottish products, including whisky, seafood and consumer foods.

The Scottish government said food and drink is one of the country’s largest manufacturing sectors and a major contributor to exports. It said the industry benefits from Scotland’s natural resources and from a reputation for quality and provenance that continues to support demand at home and abroad.

In the report, officials describe the United States as one of the world’s largest food and drink markets and a priority destination for Scottish exporters. The document says there is significant room for growth in the U.S., particularly for premium categories where Scottish producers already have strong recognition.

The report is intended to give businesses a market overview, identify opportunities and challenges, and set out actions aimed at helping Scottish companies expand sales in the United States.

For beverage producers, the plan matters because it offers guidance for companies trying to build or protect their position in a market that is central to Scotch whisky and other premium drinks. It also comes as tariff-related disruption remains an important ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Indian Malt Whisky Association launches mark of authenticity
A new certification from the Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) will identify single malts that meet the requisite standards with a secure hologram, The Spirits Business reported on June 24.

The New Delhi-based IMWA has described the initiative as ‘a formal, industry-led framework to define and certify genuine Indian single malts amid growing global recognition and increasing domestic demand.’

In order to bear the IMWA Certification Trademark hologram, a whisky must be made with 100% malted barley, at a single distillery, using copper pot stills, and aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks not larger than 700 litres.

The IMWA further specifies that all stages of production, including bottling, must take place in India and that no molasses, neutral spirits, or ‘external flavouring agents’ are permitted.

It describes the set of standards as ‘aligned with globally recognised benchmarks while accounting for India’s distinct terroir and climatic conditions.’

Rajesh Chopra, director general of the IMWA, commented: “As the Indian single malt category scales both domestically and globally, the need for a credible, industry-owned validation mechanism becomes critical.

“The certification mark is not just about compliance but about establishing a shared baseline of authenticity and process integrity. It aims to bring clarity in a fragmented ...More info on site
