Ethiopia: Ethiopia moves to stop malt imports with public-private research pact
|
The Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research signed a landmark agreement forging a strategic alliance with the country’s four premier malt processors, Asella, Boortmalt, Gondar, and Soufflet, to directly finance advanced domestic barley research, elevate smallholder yields, and secure a fully sustainable, industry-grade local supply chain, Ethiopia Today reported on June 30.
The parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding that establishes a long-term collaborative framework through which EIAR and the four malt industry partners will jointly support research on malt barley breeding, germplasm enhancement, variety development and release, seed multiplication, agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, grain quality improvement, technology verification and scaling, capacity building, knowledge exchange, and dissemination of improved technologies.
The partnership will also promote demand-driven research that directly addresses the needs of Ethiopia’s malt and brewing industries while increasing productivity, profitability, and competitiveness across the malt barley value chain.
The strategic public-private partnership establishes a long-term collaborative framework to directly fund and advance domestic malt barley research, focusing heavily on breeding high-yielding varieties that meet the strict quality standards of the malting and brewing industries.
Industry leaders from the four premier malt factories reaffirmed their corporate commitment to investing in this agricultural innovation, noting that securing a sustainable local supply chain is the only

Senegal: Damm opens its first production facility in Africa
|
Damm is accelerating its international growth strategy with the opening of its first production facility in Africa. Located in Dakar, Senegal, the new soft drinks manufacturing site is designed to supply customers across Senegal and neighboring West African markets, marking a significant step in the company's efforts to build a more localized and agile production network, Inside.Beer reported on June 26.
With this latest development, international operations now account for approximately 30% of the company's total business. The expansion into Africa follows a period of targeted infrastructure investment. In the United Kingdom, Damm has invested more than EUR 80 million (GBP 70 million) in Damm Eagle Brewery in Bedford over recent years. The investment has increased production capacity, added new manufacturing lines, and expanded the brewery's capabilities in the alcohol-free beer and soft drinks categories.
The company has also strengthened its market position through strategic portfolio diversification. In late 2024, Damm signed an agreement with Nestlé to manufacture, market, and distribute the iced tea brand Nestea across Spain, Andorra, Gibraltar, and Portugal. The partnership has reinforced the brewer's position in the noncarbonated soft drinks segment. In addition, the company recently agreed to acquire the Old Speckled Hen ale brand family from Greene

Germany: May beer sales drop 7.5% from a year earlier
|
Beer sales in Germany fell again in May, extending a downturn that is adding pressure across the country’s brewing industry and raising fresh concerns about domestic demand, Vinetur reported on June 29.
Getränke Zeitung, citing current brewery figures, reported that total beer volume in May dropped 7.5% from a year earlier to about 6.96 million hectolitres. Taxable domestic sales, a closely watched measure of consumption in the home market, fell 8.4%, to 5.68 million hectolitres from 6.19 million hectolitres a year earlier.
The decline points to continued weakness in one of Europe’s largest beer markets at a time when brewers are already dealing with higher costs and changing drinking habits. Industry observers cited by the publication linked the drop to several factors, including rising prices, shifts in consumer behavior and the absence of some post-pandemic celebration effects that had previously supported sales.
The figures are especially important for the broader drinks business because they offer a current signal of pressure on on-premise and retail consumption. For breweries, distributors, bars and supermarket chains, weaker beer demand can affect production planning, purchasing decisions and pricing strategies in the coming months, particularly during the summer season, when sales are usually more weather-sensitive.
Smaller and midsize breweries are

Australia: Lion not planning to sell James Boag's brewery but would be open for it for the right price
|
The multinational owner of Tasmania's beloved James Boag's brewery says it has no plans to sell the brand, but would be open to it for the right price, ABC News reported on July 1.
There was confusion after the union representing the workers at the soon-to-be-shuttered Tasmanian brewery said owner Lion Australia "has agreed to sell the iconic Tasmanian brand Boag's along with the brewery in Launceston".
Lion then issued a statement refuting the union's clams, saying it was "not our intention to sell the James Boag's brand".
However, a letter from Lion to the United Workers Union (UWU ) dated June 25, and seen by the ABC, had indicated a willingness to sell both the brewery and the brand.
Lion bought the Launceston-based brewery for $325 million in 2007, but the company has confirmed it is proceeding with plans to shut the Tasmanian brewery doors on November 6, ending 145 years of local beer history.
Boag's is currently brewed on the mainland, after production was moved there in past years, with the original Launceston brewery only continuing on to supply the local Tasmanian market.
The move to shut the brewery will end local production.
In an early morning press release, the union said Lion "has agreed

UK: England’s World Cup draw sent UK pub beer and cider sales up 77%
|
A World Cup match and a heat wave gave Britain’s pubs and bars a sharp midweek lift, with draught beer and cider sales rising 77% from a typical Tuesday, according to new analysis from The Oxford Partnership based on Beverage Metrics volume data from Vianet, Vinetur reported on June 26.
The figures cover June 23, when England played Ghana in its second group-stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Even though the game ended in a scoreless draw, pubs across the UK sold 5.4 million pints of draught beer and cider over the day, the analysis found. That worked out to an average of 170 pints per outlet and about £935 in draught revenue per pub.
The gain was notable because the match fell on a Tuesday evening, usually one of the harder trading days for hospitality operators. Compared with the average June Tuesday in 2025, venues sold an extra 74 pints each.
England’s pubs averaged 173.8 pints per outlet, while Scotland and Wales also posted gains as interest in the tournament spread across the UK. London recorded the highest sales rate at 232 pints per venue, while the East of England posted the strongest growth, with sales up nearly 99% from

South Korea: South Korea loses nearly half of neighborhood pubs in last eight years
|
South Korea has lost nearly half of its neighborhood pubs in the past eight years, according to official data that point to a sharp contraction in one of the country’s traditional drinking channels, Vinetur reported on June 26.
Figures from the National Tax Service show the number of casual pubs and beer houses fell to 28,178 in March 2026 from 52,302 in 2018, when the records were first compiled. That is a drop of more than 24,000 businesses, or 46%.
The decline sped up over the past year. Between March 2025 and March 2026, the number of pubs fell by 2,998, a 9.6% decrease that works out to about eight closures a day.
Casual pubs, known in South Korea as ganee jujeom, fell 10.2% year over year, to 7,985 from 8,894. Beer-focused hof pubs dropped 9.4%, to 20,193 from 22,282.
The figures reflect pressure from both costs and changing consumer habits. Years of high inflation have raised rents, labor costs and other operating expenses for small independent operators, which make up much of South Korea’s pub trade. At the same time, after-work drinking gatherings that were once central to corporate culture have become less common.
Younger South Koreans are also drinking less than earlier generations,
