Spain: Beer consumption drops by 4.4% in 2025
|
Beer consumption in Spain experienced a 4.4% drop in 2025, settling at 50.5 litres per person, attributed to spending restraint and shifts in leisure habits, La Voz Canaria reported on July 2.
Beer consumption in Spain fell by 4.4% in 2025, reaching 50.5 litres per person per year.
According to the association Cerveceros de España, the decline is attributed to spending restraint due to inflation and a change in leisure habits affecting alcoholic beverages in general.
In contrast, sales of alcohol-free beers saw a 4.6% increase during the past year. Furthermore, a production record was registered, consolidating Spain as the second-largest beer producer in Europe.
The most significant decrease in consumption was observed in bars and restaurants, with a 2.4% volume decline, while distribution saw a 0.4% growth. In value terms, beer accounts for 1.3% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and generates 540,000 jobs.
The report highlights that over 90% of the raw materials used in beer production are of national origin, underscoring the sector's commitment to Spanish agriculture.
In the hospitality channel, beer represents 44% of total beverages consumed and 25% of revenue. 82.4% of beer sold in this channel is served in reusable containers, which remain the preferred option.

India: Carlsberg India files for $700 mn IPO
|
India’s second-largest beer maker Carlsberg India, the local arm of Danish brewing major Carlsberg Group, has filed for a $700 million (`6,700 crore) IPO through the confidential route and the issue may hit the market towards the end of the calendar year, the New Indian Express reported on July 2.
The brewer submitted a confidential pre-filed draft papers to the SEBI on Wednesday, according to a company statement issued on Thursday, which also said the timing of the proposed share sale will depend on regulatory approvals and prevailing market conditions.
Confidential filing allows companies to submit IPO documents to the regulator without immediately making them public, enabling them to keep details of the offering private until closer to the launch. "Carlsberg India has submitted a confidential pre-filed draft red herring prospectus to the SEBI,” the company said without offering the issue size.
However, sources said the Carlsberg India issue is likely to be about $700 million or `6,700 crore. The offer is structured as only an offer for sale (OFS), with no fresh issue and the company is looking at a post-issue valuation of about $4 billion. It has also appointed Kotak Mahindra Capital, JP Morgan Chase, and Citigroup as lead managers.

China: Subdued demand weighing on Budweiser Brewing’s China sales
|
Goldman Sachs analysts say weak catering traffic is brewer's biggest headwind, while "super premium" products are outperforming, MSN reported on July 1.
Subdued demand in China is likely to have weighed on Budweiser Brewing APAC's second-quarter sales, according to analysts, but the ongoing Fifa World Cup might provide a brighter start to the third quarter.
Citing information from investor relations personnel at Belgian beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev's Asian subsidiary, Goldman Sachs analysts said in a report issued on June 29 that Budweiser Brewing believed weak catering traffic remained the biggest headwind in China, with nightlife sales having remained relatively stable.
Budweiser is expected to report its second-quarter results on July 30.
Another Goldman Sachs report, released on June 30, forecast a 2.4 per cent organic volume decline for AB InBev in the Asia-Pacific region.
Jacky Tsang, an equity analyst at Morningstar, said: "Demand in on-trade channels has been soft and remained the case in the second quarter, due to sluggish consumer sentiment."
The World Cup, running from June 11 to July 19, coincides with the summer beer consumption peak in the world's second-largest consumer goods market.
Tsang said Budweiser Brewing had ramped up World Cup-related marketing activities in China - with AB InBev serving as the event's

Kenya: Diageo sale of East African Breweries hits major roadblock of multiple lawsuits
|
An agreed sale of East African Breweries to Japanese beer maker Asahi has hit a major roadblock as multiple lawsuits have been filed to stop it going through, the Drinks Business reported on July 2.
When Diageo announced last December that it was to sell its controlling 65% stake in East African Breweries Limited (EABL), headquartered in Kenya, to Japanese brewer Asahi, it looked to be a straightforward transaction as part of the drinks’ giant’s programme to unload peripheral assets and reduce its debts.
Six months later the US$2.3 billion deal, which is scheduled to complete later this year, has found its way to the in-tray of Kenya’s Chief Justice.
Several suits have been filed in a bid to halt the deal before they are settled. One came from a distributor which claimed Diageo had wrongly ended a contract several years ago, while another came from a construction company. Even individual shareholders have sought to derail the deal on the grounds of unfair treatment.
While Diageo and EABL reject all the claims, the fact that they have been lodged in several different jurisdictions has led to Diageo requesting Chief Justice Martha Koome to consolidate them into the hands of a single court or judge.

World: Current barley price trends presenting varied landscape across the globe
|
The current world barley price trends present a varied landscape, RMI Analytics said in their early July Journal.
French malting barley prices have surged significantly, while other regions are experiencing declines, thanks to favourable crop development. Feed barley prices are lower, largely due to Black Sea harvest and the competitive pricing emerging from that area.
The result of varied global crop development leaves French prices rising to meet with price declines in Australia, Canada, and Argentina. It is possible that these conflicting price movements can in fact make sense: clearly a risk premium for French prices is validated by the current hot/dry weather conditions; while very good crop prospects in other key regions are reducing any risk premium that remained in those markets. Look for French prices to be pivotal going forward.

EU & UK: Barley prices higher due to hot weather across Europe
|
Barley prices are higher due to hot weather sweeping across Europe, potential impacting the final quality, mainly spring-sown barley. Winter barley prices are following higher, despite a harvest with a near normal result and only minor quality variability, RMI Analytics said in their latest report.
The EU-27 barley exports ended the crop’25 cycle at nearly 3.5 mln tonnes ahead of crop’24, which has been very supportive to prices for several months.
RMI team’s visit to Denmark and Sweden in late June presented good crop progression but the recent heat was not helpful, as moisture was already in need.
There is rain in the forecast for Denmark and Sweden which will be essential at this stage.
UK’s winter harvest is set to advance and looks good while spring, although dry in places, is ok but planted area is down sharply. Prices are following closely French spring crop developments.
