Brewery news China: World Cup froths up AB InBev's China sales
Belgian brewing giant AB InBev is leveraging the ongoing FIFA World Cup this summer for growth expansion, with recent efforts in the Chinese market including rolling out a real-time retail framework in the country that extends beyond driving beer sales, featuring 15-minute delivery for fans watching at home or in bars, 1-liter shareable packs designed for group toasting rituals and debut distribution at snack outlets frequented by young consumers, the China Daily reported on July 7.

Fabio Sala, president of Budweiser China, said the strategy is built around capturing soccer's peak emotional moments and turning them into consumption occasions across digital and physical channels — from instant-commerce platforms to themed retail stores and "community" viewing venues.

By many metrics, soccer remains the most widely followed sport globally, with more than half of the world's population identifying as fans, Nielsen data showed. Sala described bars and restaurants during major tournaments as "living rooms of shared emotion", where consumers gather to watch, celebrate and interact.

"People don't just watch football — they live it together," said Sala, adding that beer is structurally embedded in these social occasions.

AB InBev, the parent company of Budweiser China, has maintained a four-decade partnership with FIFA. Historically, World Cup cycles ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands: Asahi Group’s subsidiary increases its stake in Dutch brewer Gulpener
Asahi Group’s Grolsch subsidiary has increased its stake in Dutch brewer Gulpener from 15% to total control.

The deal, announced late last week, includes the family-owned business’s namesake brand, as well as the Château Neubourg, Gerardus Kloosterbier and Korenwolf beers and non-alcoholic Batu Kombucha. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Then-independent Grolsch acquired an initial minority stake in Gulpener in 1997. In 2016, Asahi purchased Grolsch from its owner since 2007, SABMiller, for EUR2.55bn (then-US$2.86bn). The Japanese brewer said buying the remaining share of Gulpener was “a logical continuation of a partnership that has already proven itself in practice for nearly 30 years”.

“We see this step as confirmation of the strength of our brands, our people, our quality and our roots in Limburg,” said Gulpener’s owner, Jan-Paul Rutten. “Over recent decades, Gulpener has developed very positively into the sustainable, local speciality brewer it is today.

“However, in order to remain successful in a challenging market, scale and commercial strength are essential. In Grolsch, we have found the best partner to secure a healthy future for the brewery and its employees.”

In December, Asahi bought Diageo’s majority holding in East African Breweries. The transaction is expected to conclude in the second half ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Major Japanese brewers expanding lineups of non-alcoholic beverages to cater to changing preferences
As younger consumers increasingly turn away from alcoholic drinks, major Japanese brewers are expanding their lineups of non-alcoholic beverages and products with low alcohol content, the Japan Times reported on July 6.

The companies believe that many young people still want to enjoy the lively atmosphere of drinking parties while avoiding or limiting alcohol consumption. Through collaborations with universities and other partners, they are exploring new ways to offer drinks that are satisfying without the effects of intoxication.

According to a 2024 survey conducted by the health ministry, the proportion of respondents in their 20s who said they “do not drink” alcohol reached 37.2%, up 6.7 percentage points from 10 years earlier. Against a backdrop of growing health consciousness and other factors, an increasing number of young people are distancing themselves from habitual drinking.

Meanwhile, a survey of about 2,000 people in their 20s to 60s conducted by Suntory Holdings in June last year found that even among respondents in their 20s, a relatively large share had favorable impressions of drinking parties with friends, colleagues and senior co-workers.

At the same time, respondents in their 20s showed the highest level of anxiety among all age groups about “saying things they should not say ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Big brewers misleading drinkers, Camra claims
Big brewers are misleading drinkers about their products’ “craft” credentials and geographical origin, the ale enthusiasts’ club Camra has claimed, as it called on the consumer watchdog to investigate the beer market, The Guardian reported on July 6.

Camra asked the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) to launch a review of whether small breweries are being unfairly elbowed off the bar by larger rivals’ anti-competitive tactics.

The organisation is concerned about the leverage wielded by multinational breweries that either own pubs themselves, or have commercial deals that allow them to ensure their own products are prioritised.

In its annual Beer in UK report, Camra said the difficulties independent brewers faced had been made worse by “misleading” claims that left drinkers unsure what they were buying.

Seven of the top 10 selling “craft beers” in the UK are made by just four global brewing conglomerates, the report found, citing examples including Beavertown (Heineken), Camden Town and Goose Island (AB InBev), Meantime (Asahi), and Blue Moon (Molson Coors).

Siba, the trade body for independent brewers, has previously ditched the “craft” terminology, replacing it with “indie” beer, in response to concerns it had become meaningless due to big companies buying up successful startup brands.

Camra also highlighted beers marketed ...More info on site

Brewery news Burkina Faso: Burkina Faso provides financial support to state-owned brewer Société Nouvelle Brasserie du Faso
Burkina Faso has provided financial support to state-owned brewer Société Nouvelle Brasserie du Faso (SN Brafaso) as the company seeks to expand production capacity and compete in the country’s increasingly competitive beer market, Ecofin Agency reported on July 7.

The Burkinabe government signed a financing agreement worth CFA30 billion ($52.3 million) with SN Brafaso on July 6, 2026. According to a statement from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the government will finance the project through funds raised under the Diaspora Bond known as “Patriotic Loan”, which targeted Burkinabe citizens at home and abroad. The funding will support SN Brafaso’s expansion strategy. In January, the government approved the construction of the company’s second beer production facility at Léguéma, in the municipality of Bobo-Dioulasso.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the future plant’s production capacity or the total investment required for the project.

SN Brafaso remains a relatively recent player in Burkina Faso’s brewing industry. The company officially resumed operations on November 25 after a 17-year shutdown. SN Brafaso originally launched in 2004, stopped operations in 2008 and returned under state ownership in 2012 after the government acquired it for CFA40 billion.

The company began its rehabilitation process in March 2024 with an initial investment of ...More info on site

Barley news Poland: First results of Poland’s winter barley harvest diappoint
The first results of Poland’s winter barley harvest indicate lower-than-expected yields and weak farmgate prices. On many farms, yields are below last year’s levels, averaging 4.5–5.0 t/ha, while some drought-affected fields are producing only around 3 t/ha. At the same time, feed barley prices are ranging from PLN 580–640/t (US$155–170/t), which producers say is insufficient to cover rising production costs, UkrAgroConsult reported on July 7.

Grain quality has become another challenge. Early deliveries are showing low test weights and significant quality variability, prompting grain elevators to apply larger discounts for barley that fails to meet quality standards. This is putting additional pressure on growers’ profitability.

Despite disappointing early harvest results, analysts do not expect a shortage of feed barley. Harvesting is still in its early stages, and higher-yielding fields remain unharvested in several regions. Meanwhile, cheaper barley is becoming more competitive than wheat and corn in feed rations, supporting demand from the livestock sector.

On the export market, Poland remains largely influenced by pricing in neighboring countries. Supplies of Ukrainian and German barley remain sufficient, limiting the ability of Polish exporters to raise prices. As a result, some farmers are choosing to delay sales in the hope of stronger market conditions later in ...More info on site

Whisky news South Korea: Kim Changsoo Whiskey unveils Andong Distillery
Kim Changsoo Whiskey, which has been challenging the notion that “whiskey can be made in Korea” since establishing a distillery in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, in 2020, has prepared a new distillery. The company plans to resolve supply shortages by increasing production tenfold. Leveraging its accumulated distillation and aging expertise, it also intends to launch a product called ‘Andong Soju’, the Chosun Ilbo reported on July 7.

Kim Changsoo Whiskey announced on the 7th that it has completed the construction of its second distillery in Andong, Gyeongbuk Province, spanning 2,500 pyeong. The project began in March 2025 and took one year and four months. Since releasing its first product in 2022, Kim Changsoo Whiskey has faced difficulties meeting demand, with all products selling out on the day of release. The newly completed Andong distillery has production and aging capacities ten times larger than the Gimpo distillery. The increased output will support domestic supply and overseas exports. The first shipment to the U.S. is planned this month.

The core distillation equipment at the Andong distillery was manufactured by the German brewing equipment company Kasper Schulz. A source from Kim Changsoo Whiskey stated, “The equipment has already successfully commenced trial operations, and full-scale whiskey production ...More info on site

Whisky news Canada: Diageo finds a buyer for former Crown Royal bottling plant in Amherstburg
A buyer has emerged for the former Crown Royal bottling plant in Amherstburg, Ontario, several months after Diageo shuttered the facility and eliminated more than 200 jobs, Yahoo!Finance reported on July 7.

Diageo confirmed it has signed a purchase and sale agreement for the property, though the company declined to identify the buyer or disclose financial terms. The transaction remains subject to due diligence and customary closing conditions.

"The process remains confidential and we are not currently in a position to share details regarding the purchaser," a Diageo spokesperson said, according to CP24. "We will share additional information when appropriate."

The company first listed the property for sale in December 2025 before officially closing the bottling plant in February 2026, ending decades of operations at the Amherstburg facility.

The closure sparked backlash from Ontario officials, including Premier Doug Ford, who threatened to remove Crown Royal products from provincial liquor stores before reaching an agreement with Diageo. Under that deal, the company committed to invest $23 million across Ontario, including $1 million earmarked for Windsor-Essex.

Amherstburg Mayor Michael Prue welcomed news that a buyer has been found but said the identity of the purchaser and the property's future remain unknown.

"I am very pleased that some movement ...More info on site
