Consumption of Japanese products, which had contracted amid the "No Japan" boycott, is expanding into everyday life on the strength of quality and brand competitiveness. Japanese beer is continuing its growth in a sluggish domestic liquor market, while Japanese fashion brands are entering Korea one after another, raising their presence, Chosun.com reported on July 27.
According to industry sources, Japanese premium beer is showing clear growth in both dining and retail channels. On-trade (restaurant and bar) draft beer sales from January to May this year rose 27% and 32% year-on-year for Sapporo and Yebisu, respectively, according to figures compiled by M's Beverage, the domestic distributor of the two brands. The Sapporo Beer Stand, which opened in Seoul's Seongsu-dong in July last year, recorded about 47,000 cumulative visitors and around 96,000 glasses of draft beer sold over one year. This means each visitor enjoyed an average of about two glasses of draft beer.
At convenience store GS25, Japanese beer sales in the first half of this year also increased 31% year-on-year. As part of a major strategic joint venture between Carlsberg Group and Sapporo Breweries, Carlsberg Britvic is pleased to announce that it will brew and distribute Japan’s Sapporo Premium beer in its UK portfolio from 1 August, the Asian Trader reported on July 28.
Following a successful 18 months of distribution across the on-trade, Carlsberg Britvic will be appointed as the brand’s full license partner, overseeing the on-trade and off-trade channels nationwide, as well as all brewing and marketing activities.

Zimbabwe: Ingwebu Breweries battling for survival

Bulawayo’s iconic Ingwebu Breweries is battling for survival after plunging deeper into financial distress, with internal documents revealing a company struggling to stay afloat amid mounting losses, ageing equipment and severe cash shortages, Newsday reported on July 24.
A first quarter 2026 board report seen by Southern Eye paints a grim picture of a brewery operating on the brink, with management determined to keep the business running while searching for an investor to inject fresh capital.
The brewery posted a net loss of US$776 361 during the first three months of the year, a 155% increase from the US$304 399 loss recorded during the same period last year.
Turnover plunged by 52% to US$1.77 million from a budgeted US$3.71 million and was also 40% below the US$2.95 million recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.
Management said keeping the brewery operational, despite the losses, was critical as shutting down could irreparably damage the business and erode market confidence.
The report attributes the poor financial performance largely to repeated equipment failures and an inability by boilers to generate adequate steam for production.
Production volumes declined by nearly 38% to 6,37 million litres, while beer sales dropped by 43.37% compared to the same period last year.

India: Indian single malt whisky expected to have grown by about 22% in 2025

Indian single malt whisky, which has won multiple international awards and gained recognition for its quality and craftsmanship in recent years, is expected to have grown to about 500,000 cases in 2025, accounting for a growth of about 22 per cent, as per data released by the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), Tribune India reported on July 26.
As the category gains more traction in India's premium and luxury spirits market, local desi labels like Amrut, Rampur, Indri, and Paul John, as well as more recent entrants like Solan Gold, GianChand, Doaab, Crazy Cock, Aaghaz, and Gamber Valley, have been the main drivers of this growth, according to CIABC.
"Within the 'Made in India' Single Malt Whisky category, brands made by Indian companies account for the dominant share of sales. For 2025, Indian manufacturers are estimated to account for around 92 per cent of the category, translating to approximately 465,000 cases," it said.
Furthermore, the Made in India single malt whisky market is still dominated by desi firms, which are expected to account for 92 per cent of category sales in 2025.

USA & UK: United States removes its 10% tariff on Scotch whisky imports
|
The United States has removed its 10% tariff on Scotch whisky imports, a move that took effect last week and is already raising expectations in the drinks industry that other alcohol categories could also see relief, Vinetur reported on July 28.
The change was confirmed after Friday, July 24, and reverses an earlier path that would have raised tariffs on single malt Scotch to 25% this year. The decision followed King Charles III’s state visit to the United States in April, according to the report.
For Scotch producers, the rollback closes a chapter that began in April 2025, when the tariff was imposed. The Scotch Whisky Association had said the measure led to losses of about £150 million for the sector.
Industry executives quickly framed the decision as more than a win for one category. Nodjame Fouad, chief executive of Pernod Ricard’s aged spirits and champagne division, said the company now hopes to see further progress on tariffs affecting other spirits and wine categories, including Irish whiskey, Champagne and Cognac. He said broader tariff removal would benefit consumers, producers and hospitality businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
