Germany: A week of extreme heat drives a sharp jump in retail beer sales
|
A week of extreme heat in Germany drove a sharp jump in retail beer purchases, with beer mixes such as radlers posting a 63% increase in sales volume and nonalcoholic beer rising 38%, according to experimental scanner data published Tuesday by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, known as Destatis.
The figures cover sales in large supermarkets during the week of June 22 to June 28 and compare them with the average for summer weeks, defined by Destatis as weeks 22 through 35, across 2023, 2024 and 2025. Destatis said the week produced the highest sales volume on record for both beer mixes and nonalcoholic beer since the series began in early 2023.
The data offer a clear view of how strongly hot weather can shift drinking habits in Germany, one of Europe’s largest beer markets. Beer mixes, which include radlers and other products that combine beer with lemonade or similar soft drinks, showed the strongest response. Nonalcoholic beer also gained sharply, suggesting that consumers turned to lighter and more refreshing options during the heat.

India: Bira beer maker appoints lender nominees to its board

Bira beer maker B9 Beverages Ltd has appointed three nominee directors to its board, marking the first major governance overhaul after founder Ankur Jain and two members of his family stepped down last week under a settlement with lenders, The Mint reported on July 30.
Regulatory filings dated 30 July on the ministry of corporate affairs' website showed that the board had appointed alternative asset management firm Anicut Capital co-founder Ilayaarunachalam Shanmugasamy Balamurugan, chief financial officer Veenu Mittal, and vice president Venkatesh Parthasarathy as nominee directors on 29 July.
B9 Beverages is backed by investors such as Japan's Kirin Holdings and Sofina. Anicut Capital and Hero Corporate Services' family office are among its principal lenders.
The appointments come days after Jain, his mother, Shashi Jain, and wife, Ankeeta Pawa, resigned from the board and their executive positions with immediate effect.
The board changes signal that lenders have begun assuming direct oversight of the company as they work to restructure the debt-laden craft brewer, which is seeking fresh capital after months of financial stress, halted production and a prolonged funding squeeze.

UK: Carling watering down the alcohol percentage in its beers

Carling is watering down the alcohol percentage in its beers in a bid to save money on tax. The beer brand is cutting the alcohol known as Alcohol By Volume (ABV) in its flagship lager from 4% down to 3.4% making the beer weaker, the Daily Star reported on July 28.
The major beer brand is the latest to cut down their alcohol percentage in a move to save money on tax in a trend that has been dubbed "drinkflation". The changes are due to hit supermarkets from October.
The reduction of alcohol content will only apply to the UK and will not hit other markets as the Carling beers in Ireland will not be affected by the change.
The change means the beer brand will have to pay less tax on the lager after new beer duty rates came into effect in the UK in 2023. The shake up sees beers with an ABV between 1.3% and 3.4% taxed at a rate of £9.96 for every litre of pure alcohol.
But beers with an ABV between 3.5% and 8.4% are taxed at a much higher rate of £22.58 for every litre of pure alcohol. Carling owner Molson Coors has said the beers will

Spain: Mahou San Miguel launching a new low-alcohol beer in Spain
|
Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel is launching a new low-alcohol beer, San Miguel Low, in response to the growing demand for low-alcohol beverages, ESM Magazine reported on July 30.
San Miguel Low has an alcohol content of 2.7% and aims to deliver the taste of a lager.
The launch is scheduled for September 2026, initially covering the hospitality sector and key cities along the Mediterranean coast, followed by a nationwide roll-out in the hospitality & food sector in January 2027.
The low-alcohol beer will be available in 33cl bottles and cans.
