UK: Brewers adjusting to counter growing threat from extreme weather
|
UK breweries small and large are adjusting to counter a growing threat from extreme weather, driving yields down and prices up, the Express reported on August 1.
While breweries typically source hops internationally, the vast majority of the barley that goes into UK beer is grown domestically. But that homegrown identity is now under strain, as increasingly long, dry periods driven by the changing climate cut into yields - adding to a sector already squeezed by declining alcohol consumption and rising operational costs.
“Some areas are very dry at the moment and yields are down,” said James Clarke, 55, managing director of Hook Norton Brewery in Oxfordshire and a fifth-generation member of the family that has run the business since 1872.
He added: “I think three of the last six years have been like that. It can mean lower yields and rising prices because of reduced availability.”
Craig Dawson, 34, manager of the Muntons barley supply chain, said the issue deserves more attention than it gets.
“There aren’t many things so widely consumed that are produced from primarily UK-grown ingredients as beer,” he said.
“We grow some of the best malting barley in the world here, because of things like soil quality and climate.”

World: AB InBev’s shareholder E.P.S. selling about 10 million shares in Belgian brewer
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev's shareholder E.P.S. SA, a holding company representing some of the firm's legacy shareholders, is selling about 10 million shares in the Belgian brewer, according to JPMorgan Securities, the bookrunner of the placement.
The shares would be worth about 752 million euros ($867.21 million), according to Reuters calculations based on Anheuser-Busch InBev's closing price on July 31.
The bookrunner said in a statement on August 3 that the final terms of the placement, including the price per share and the number of shares sold, will be determined later.
E.P.S. owns over 67 million shares in Anheuser-Busch InBev, about 3.75% of the company's outstanding stock, according to LSEG data.

From the end of this year, South Korea will slash the 20% tax break on draught beer, the government has announced in the 2026 tax reform plan, with bars across the country bracing for cost increases, the drinks business reported on August 4.
Bars and restaurants across South Korea are steeling themselves for price hikes after the government announced that the 20% tax holiday on draught beer will end from next year, according to the Ministry of Finance and Economy’s 2026 tax reform package.
Currently, beer taxes are decided on volume instead of price. While standard beer is taxed at 885,700 won per kilolitre, the tax rate for draught beer is 708,560 – thanks to the 20% discount the category has been subject to since 2020.
Six years ago, the government issued the 20% tax holiday in a bid to help the draught beer industry, whose tax burden had grown disproportionately large, and the application period has since been extended multiple times. However, officials have now decided that the beer sector has sufficiently benefited from the reduction, prompting the decision to end it later this year.

UK & India: Lion Brewery Co returns to India
|
British brewer Lion Brewery Co has re-entered the Indian market after an absence of more than six decades, launching its premium beer portfolio in Delhi as it seeks to tap into the country's fast-growing premium beer segment, Rediff Money reported on August 2.
The company has partnered with Copperdrop Spirits as its exclusive importer and distributor in India, with plans to expand distribution to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the next phase.
The brewer, which was founded in London in 1836, said it has historical links with India and was among early producers and exporters of India Pale Ale (IPA), a beer style originally developed for export to the country during the British era.
"India is not just a new market for us, it's part of Lion brewery co's story," said Will Julius, Managing Director of Lion brewery co.
Lion brewery co is looking at the premium side of the Indian beer market, which is growing at an accelerated pace of over 40 per cent annually, driven by rising urban disposable incomes, a shift toward milder or craft options, and a massive surge in microbreweries.

Sri Lanka: Court of Appeal to hear challenge over use of rice, sugar in beer production
|
Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal has fixed for October 2 a writ petition challenging the alleged use of rice and sugar as primary raw materials in beer production, allowing the respondents to file their objections before the matter is taken up again, the Daily News reported on July 31.
The petition was considered by a bench comprising Justices R. Gurusinghe and A. Prema Shankar.
Counsel representing several liquor manufacturing companies named as respondents requested the Court to grant a date to file objections to the petition.
The Court accordingly granted permission for the respondents to file their objections and directed that the petition be called on October 2.
The petition has been filed by a group of licensed liquor sellers against the Commissioner General of Excise and relevant officials, the Sri Lanka Standards Institution, the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police, among others.
They have therefore sought an order restraining the respondents, including the Commissioner General of Excise, from granting approval for the use of rice and sugar as primary raw materials in beer production.

Rwanda: 101 alcohol production sites shut down over safety concerns
|
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Rwanda has shut 101 alcohol production sites and recalled their products over safety concerns, the drinks business reported on August 4.
On 3 August, the Rwanda government’s FDA issued a public announcement regarding the closure of 101 sites that produced alcoholic beverages such as gin, vodka and various flavoured expressions like ‘pineapple’ wine and ‘banana-based’ drinks.
The move is part of a nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol. The FDA has also revoked the manufacturing licences of all affected companies.
The authority called for products from the 101 sites to be withdrawn from the market, instructing manufacturers to submit recall reports within three days.
It also urged all distributors and retailers to immediately stop the sale of all products from the blacklisted facilities. The FDA also warned the public to stop consuming the products.
The list includes Yego Manufacturers, which produces Gorilla Gin, Leyon Vodka and Lion Heart Rum, as well as Kasesa Distillers and Distributors, which makes African Gin among other products.

HEINEKEN UK has announced the launch of one of the UK’s leading regenerative malting barley programmes, in partnership with maltsters Muntons and Boortmalt, barley merchants Cefetra, and independent agronomists Soil Capital, to support UK farmers to adopt regenerative agriculture practices at scale, The Manufacturer reported on August 4.
Farmers will be directly paid a premium on regenerative barley yields, helping to reduce the risk of changing farming practices and making the transition commercially viable. This approach, combined with the scale of the programme, sets it apart from other regenerative agriculture malting barley initiatives in the UK to date.
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming methods designed to improve soil health, retain carbon in the soil, support biodiversity, enhance water management and build resilience against climate change.
In 2027, almost half of the malted barley sourced by HEINEKEN UK will be grown through regenerative agriculture practices, marking a major step in the company’s move to support the transition and make regenerative farming part of mainstream beer production.

USA: Oregon hop growers and brewers excited about quality of this year’s harvest

It’s too early to know if Oregon hop growers can retain the #2 ranking for hop production in the U.S. after narrowly beating Idaho in 2025. But, Oregon growers and brewers are excited about the quality of this year’s harvest and expect the volume to remain roughly the same, The New School reported on August 4.
Next week, many of Oregon’s hop growers will begin the first round of harvest, with fresh hop beer season soon to follow as brewers pick up fresh hops from local farms for a once-a-year beer experience unique to the Pacific Northwest. Growers and brewers say Oregon beer drinkers should be especially excited about this year’s batch, as favorable weather yielded high-quality hops.
“After a few tough years with hop acreages declining as beer sales dipped, Oregon hop growers are especially excited about this year’s hop harvest. |
India's food safety regulator has barred the sale of some popular whiskies and rum made by Diageo's India unit and India's Inbrew Beverages for using artificial flavouring instead of proper ageing and ingredients to achieve their taste and aroma, Reuters reported on August 2.
India is one of the world's biggest alcohol markets, with total annual sales estimated at $40 billion. Diageo is the nation's biggest alcohol company by market share, with its popular brands competing with the likes of Pernod Ricard.
The locally made spirits subject to the regulator's bans are more affordable than imported rum and whisky.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said it allows the use of natural flavouring substances in alcoholic drinks, but its tests found that some Diageo and Inbrew factories were adding flavours of the alcoholic beverage itself, like adding rum flavour to rum.
"There is no internationally recognized manufacturing practice whereby rum flavour is added to rum or whisky flavour is added to whisky," the FSSAI said in a statement late on August 2.
Such flavours would allow companies to bypass maturation or the use of natural ingredients such as molasses, malt, or grapes, FSSAI added.

UK: Diageo accused of refusing to engage with workers to ease impact of job losses
|
GMB Scotland has accused Diageo of refusing to engage with workers and ease the impact of job losses at its Scotch distilleries, The Spirits Business reported on August 5.
The union, which is one of the biggest in the drinks sector, said the British firm has rejected alternatives to compulsory redundancies and is ignoring the risk to rural communities across the Highlands and Islands.
Diageo has placed 172 distillery workers in the region at risk of redundancy and warned 38 could lose their jobs as part of its global restructuring.
Another 150 jobs are at risk in Ireland.
In Scotland, Diageo has just completed a four-week consultation with workers. However, GMB claims no agreement has been reached on the number of potential job losses or the redundancy process.
Lesley-Anne Macaskill, GMB Scotland organiser in the Highlands and Islands, said: “We have now had five meetings with the company to discuss its plans, but there has been no serious attempt to engage with our members’ concerns or modify its plans in any way.
“This has not been a genuine consultation but a box-ticking exercise by a company intent on steam-rolling through job losses to a plan that has already been decided.
