China: Ningbo authorities move to cancel Budweiser unit’s expired beer production license
|
Authorities in Ningbo have begun the process to cancel the food production license held by Budweiser Ningbo Beer, an AB InBev brewing unit in eastern China, according to a public notice that says the permit expired on Aug. 1 and is now subject to administrative cancellation unless the company completes the required procedures, Vinetur reported on August 6.
The notice, dated Aug. 3 and reproduced by China International Beer Network, identifies the original source as the Market Supervision Administration of Haishu District in Ningbo, a port city in Zhejiang Province. In China, beer production falls under the country’s food manufacturing permit system, so the action concerns the administrative license that allows the company to produce beer.
The document says Budweiser Ningbo Beer’s food production license has reached the end of its validity period. Under the procedure described in the notice, the company has 30 days to formally apply for cancellation of the expired license. It also has five working days to submit statements or arguments if it wishes to contest or respond to the proposed action.

USA: Asahi Beer USA installs new high-speed bottling line at Waunakee, Wisconsin facility
|
Asahi Beer USA on August 11 announced the installation of a new high-speed bottling line at Octopi, its facility in Waunakee, Wisconsin.
Capable of producing up to 20,000 bottles per hour, the new line expands Asahi Beer USA's production platform and reinforces Octopi's position as a leading co-manufacturing partner for beverage brands scaling across formats and retail channels. The system was installed through a nearly 90-container equipment build-out.
At a time when many beverage producers are consolidating around cans, this investment reflects a deliberate strategy to support continued demand for bottled formats among super-premium, international, and multi-format brands.
"Asahi Super Dry is one of the fastest growing beer brands in the USA across bottles, cans and kegs," said Paul Verdu, Managing Director of Asahi Beer USA. Moldova: Beer consumption grows to 128.7 mln liters in 2025
|
The beer market in Moldova has been growing rapidly in recent years, reaching nearly 129 million liters by 2025, Logos Press reported on August 11.
Data compiled by economist Stas Madan shows that last year, Moldovans consumed 128.7 million liters of beer, compared to 105.3 million liters in 2019.
During this period, consumption increased by 23.4 million liters, representing a rise of approximately 22% over six years.
According to estimates, between 2019 and 2025, total beer consumption in the Republic of Moldova increased by an average of 3.7% per year.
This trend indicates steady market expansion, although growth rates varied from year to year.
For the population aged 15 and older, average beer consumption is approximately 61 liters per person per year.
Seven out of every ten liters of beer consumed in the country were produced in Moldova.
The local market is primarily supplied by domestic producers. According to data analyzed by an economist, the Republic of Moldova’s beer industry accounts for approximately 70% of domestic consumption.
Imports account for the remaining approximately 30%.
The high share of local production underscores the importance of the domestic industry for the beer market and for meeting domestic demand.

Japan: Suntory aims to resume brewing at earthquake-hit Kyushu Kumamoto plant within the year
|
Suntory Holdings announced on the 10th that recovery at its Kyushu Kumamoto plant, damaged by the Kumamoto earthquake, is expected to take approximately three to four months, BiGo Finance reported.
Production equipment and portions of the building sustained damage, and operations are currently fully suspended. Beer production was shifted to plants in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Gunma starting August 1, while soft drink manufacturing was redirected to 10 domestic plants and contract partners from August 6, ensuring supply continuity.
The same plant was also damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, requiring about a year and a half to normalize operations, with damages reaching approximately ¥10 billion (approximately $63.0 million). This time, the company aims to resume production within the year, with its business continuity plan (BCP), refined based on lessons from the previous disaster, contributing to the swift implementation of alternative production.

UK: Founder and former CEO of BrewDog eyeing a series of brewery acquisitions

James Watt, founder and former CEO of BrewDog, is eyeing a series of brewery acquisitions for his new ‘Second Best’ brand, Food Manufacture reported on August 11.
Watt founded Second Best following his failed bid to buy the ailing BrewDog earlier this year. The business was eventually sold to US firm Tilray Brands.
According to a social media post by Watt, Second Best already has two beer recipes ready for production: a 6.7% ‘West Coast IPA’ and a 5.4% ‘Export Helles’.
The startup is also exploring the acquisition of three breweries to begin production and is actively in talks with potential “brewing partners”.
In his new venture, Watt has offered free shares to former Equity Punks, the 220,000 investors who previously held shares in BrewDog and helped fund its rise from a local Scottish challenger business into a multinational brewing and hospitality empire.
Many thousands of those investors were left deeply dissatisfied by BrewDog’s collapse into administration in March this year and its subsequent sale to Tilray, which left them with little or no return on their shares.
Watt said that 50,000 people have now registered to “own a piece” of Second Best before it begins production.

Kenya: East African Breweries rules out investment slump ahead of takeover by Asahi
|
East African Breweries is planning for life after Diageo, with the transition now the company's top strategic priority, The Star reported on August 7.
The brewer said its focus has shifted to ensuring business continuity and a smooth handover once the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) approves Japan's Asahi Group Holdings' takeover.
Speaking after the company's full-year results announcement, EABL Managing Director Jane Karuku said operational preparations are already underway, marking the clearest indication yet that the company is planning for a post-Diageo era.
"Looking ahead, of course, the biggest agenda in front of us is transition. When we get that approval, we have to make sure that the business continues to perform, but also has a very successful transition because transitions are important and we all need to be all hands-on deck to make sure that we are successful," said Karuku.
Diageo announced in December 2025 that it intended to sell its stake in EABL to Asahi, one of Japan's largest beverage companies.

USA: Tilray Brands ceasing production at Terrapin brewery Georgia

Tilray Brands is ceasing production at the Terrapin brewery in Athens, Georgia, less than two years after it purchased the company from Molson Coors. The facility's taproom and warehouse will reportedly remain open as Terrapin beer production moves to other breweries beginning Sept 25, Yahoo! Finance reported on August 10.
In a 10-K filing made on July 28, the Canada-based cannabis manufacturer laid out its "Project 420" business optimization plan, spearheaded by sharp cuts to the conglomerate's brewing operations. Terrapin — alongside Redhook, Atwater, Hop Valley and Revolver — will all face closures and consolidations as the cost-cutting initiative takes effect.
The filing mentions costs incurred from employee termination benefits, though it does not disclose how many employees have or will be laid off in the restructuring plan. Business data platforms suggest that Terrapin Beer Co. currently employs between 50 and 200 workers.

South Korea: Beer and soju increasingly give up eye-level shelf space to ready-to-drink cocktails

At Korean convenience stores, the liquor aisle's most valuable real estate is changing hands, the Korea Herald reported on August 8.
Eye-level shelves once dominated by 500-milliliter beer cans and green soju bottles are increasingly filled with colorful ready-to-drink cocktails and bottles of lower-alcohol flavored soju, as Koreans drink less and seek lighter options.
"These days, more customers buy RTD (ready-to-drink) products and flavored soju with lower alcohol content," a convenience store owner in Seoul said.
"Sales of traditional green-bottle (plain) soju and 500-ml beer have weakened over the past few years, so I naturally had to reorganize the displays."
The changing shelves reflect a broader decline in Korean alcohol consumption. Liquor shipments totaled 3.15 million kiloliters in 2024, down 17.3 percent from a decade earlier, according to Statistics Korea.
Average monthly household spending on alcoholic beverages fell 9 percent on-year to 13,000 won ($9.20) in the first quarter, the steepest decline since quarterly tracking began in 2019.
The shift accelerated during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as corporate after-work drinking declined and demographic changes combined with "healthy pleasure" and "sober curious" trends.
