Japan: Beer and quasi-beer sales fall 7% in July
|
Sales of beer and quasi-beer products in Japan in July fell 7 pct from a year earlier in volume, down for the fourth consecutive month, industry officials said on August 13.
The decline was apparently because of reduced spending by consumers struggling with rising prices as well as bad weather.
Sales to households decreased 8 pct while those to restaurants declined 3 pct.
By type, beer sales dropped 3 pct and those of "happoshu" quasi-beer fell 9 pct. Sales of beer-like products known as third-segment beer dived 15 pct.
Suntory Spirits Ltd. posted a 10 pct decline in beer and quasi-beer sales volume. Sapporo Breweries Ltd. saw a 1 pct drop.

UK: Low- and no-alcohol beer is a larger share of orders in British bars
|
Low- and no-alcohol beer is taking a larger share of orders in British bars even as demand for the traditional pint continues to rise, according to transaction data released Wednesday by Square, the payments company, Vinetur reported.
Square said low- and no-alcohol beer accounted for 1.02% of all bar transactions in the 12 months from June 1, 2025, through May 31, 2026, up from 0.84% in the previous 12-month period. That was an increase of 0.18 percentage points, or 21.4% in relative terms.
The figures point to a market that is expanding across several drinking occasions at once rather than moving in a single direction. Full pint purchases were up 30% from a year earlier, Square said. At the same time, smaller beer serves, a category that includes half pints, schooners, bottles and cans, also posted gains, especially at the start of the workweek.
On Wednesdays, purchases of those smaller serves rose 27% from a year earlier. Monday sales were up 23%, and Tuesday sales rose 20%. Square said most of those purchases were made between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with 7 p.m. the busiest hour. London accounted for 44% of all smaller beer serves sold in Britain within the Square data

South Korea: Lotte Chilsung to expand its non-alcoholic beer lineup

Lotte Chilsung is set to expand its non-alcoholic beer lineup nearly one year and seven months after launching Cloud Non-Alcoholic, introducing a new lemon-lime flavor, Heraldcorp.com reported on August 13.
According to industry sources Thursday, Lotte Chilsung has completed a product manufacturing report for "Cloud Non-Alcoholic Lemon Lime" with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and is reviewing a launch timeline. The manufacturing report is a regulatory procedure in which companies submit product details — including name, type, ingredients and raw materials — before production and retail distribution begin. It is generally considered the final step before a new product hits shelves.
The new product is the first follow-up to Cloud Non-Alcoholic since the original launched in January last year, a gap of about one year and seven months. Cloud Non-Alcoholic is a non-alcoholic beer with an alcohol content of 0.3 percent or below, classified as a carbonated beverage under food regulations. It uses a special yeast that suppresses alcohol production during fermentation while preserving the taste and aroma of the Cloud brand.

Germany: Germany to ban supervised drinking for teenagers
|
A rule that allows 14 and 15-year-olds to drink alcohol in Germany when supervised by an adult is set to be scrapped, The Local Germany reported on August 13.
A glass of sparkling wine for a grandchild at a birthday celebration, or a beer for a young guest at a wedding: in Germany, allowing teenagers to have an alcoholic drink in the company of their parents has long been part of social life.
But that tradition could soon come to an end.
The German Cabinet on August 12 approved plans to scrap a rule that currently allows 14- and 15-year-olds to drink beer, wine or sparkling wine when accompanied by a responsible adult.
The proposal, put forward by Family Minister Karin Prien of the centre-right CDU, will soon be debated in the Bundestag.
The government had previously considered raising the legal drinking age to 18. Instead, it aims to remove the special provision for younger teenagers, meaning the existing age limit of 16 for consuming beer, wine and sparkling wine will continue to apply – but without the exception.

Ireland: Irish whiskey changes can 'broaden' category
|
The public consultation into rules that govern Irish whiskey will finish on 4 September, which has received submissions from the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA) and Irish Whiskey Guild (IWG), The Spirits Business reported on August 14.
Changes sought for Irish whiskey’s technical file, published in 2014, include the mash bill for Irish pot still. As it stands, the recipe currently must contain a minimum of 30% malted barley, a minimum of 30% unmalted barley, and then only up to 5% of other grains.
The hope is to amend the ‘other grains’ allowance from 5% to 30%, but specified as oats, wheat and rye.
Other changes include removing references to oak casks in maturation, the words ‘currently non-peated’ from the pot still definition, and increasing the allowance of malted barley for grain Irish whiskey from 30% to 40%.
While Dingle Distillery hasn’t played around with the technical file or other options around pot still as much as some other Irish distilleries might have done, its managing director Elliot Hughes feels the changes would be a positive for the Irish whiskey industry and make the category a bit broader.

South Korea: Diageo cuts Korea Jobs as after-work drinking fades
|
Diageo Korea has offered voluntary redundancies to its entire workforce as the decline of South Korea’s once-pervasive after-work drinking culture weakens demand for whisky and other traditional alcoholic drinks, Vino Joy News reported on August 14.
The Johnnie Walker owner is offering departing employees compensation of up to 36 months’ salary, plus a special payment of 20 million won ($14,500), according to a report on South Korean portal Daum.
It is the company’s first redundancy programme in about two years, following a similar round in 2024. The move comes after Diageo Korea’s operating profit fell 48.1% last year to 9.4 billion won ($6.8 million).
Other whisky companies are also under pressure. Operating profit at South Korean whisky producer Golden Blue fell 36.3%, while Pernod Ricard Korea recorded a 71.6% decline.
Golden Blue cancelled its performance bonus last year, which had previously amounted to between 100% and 130% of an employee’s monthly salary. The company may again withhold bonuses this year because of its weak performance.
The downturn reflects more than a cyclical slowdown. South Korea’s drinks companies are confronting a structural change in when, where and why consumers drink.
