Brewery news Uruguay: Uruguay's only industrial brewer negotiates cutting 80 jobs or ending production
Fábricas Nacionales de Cerveza (FNC), Uruguay's only industrial beer producer, is negotiating with the government and the trade union a restructuring that would cut 80 of the 400 jobs at its Montevideo and Minas plants. The company keeps a second scenario on the table, which the parties involved regard as less likely: abandoning local production and operating as an importer, with a workforce reduced to around 100 employees, Mercopress reported n August 17.

The company, owned by Brazil's Ambev, itself part of Belgium's AB InBev, employs slightly more than 500 people. Founded in 1866 by the German Conrado Niding, it concentrates all of the country's industrial production under the Pilsen, Patricia, Norteña and Zillertal brands.

FNC attributes the review to a loss of competitiveness. “Brewing a beer in Uruguay costs twice as much as brewing it in Argentina or Brazil,” it said in a statement, attributing the difference to logistics, labour and tax costs. The company is not making losses: it closed 2025 with around 20 million dollars in profits, after five years with results ranging between 7 and 17 million.

The backdrop is a shift in the market. Imported beer, mainly cans from Brazil, accounted for 3% of Uruguayan consumption in 2010, ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Japan to cut excise tax on beer, raise tax on lower malt substitutes on October 1
Japan will cut the excise tax on beer by 14.4% and raise the tax on its main lower-malt substitutes by 15.5% starting Oct. 1, a change that will erase a long-standing price advantage for beer-like drinks that were developed in part to avoid higher taxes, Vinetur reported on August 18.

The change will lower the tax on a 350 ml can of beer to 54.25 yen from 63.35 yen, a drop of 9.10 yen, according to Japan’s Ministry of Finance. Over the same period, the tax on happoshu and so-called third-category products, two Japanese beer alternatives made with less malt or other ingredients, will rise to the same 54.25 yen from 46.99 yen, an increase of 7.26 yen.

The result is a structural shift in one of the world’s most distinctive beer markets. The 16.36-yen tax gap that has separated standard beer from cheaper substitutes will disappear, removing the main fiscal incentive that supported those categories for decades.

The figures were highlighted in an Aug. 14 analysis by HotelBank, which reviewed the final stage of Japan’s multi-year alcohol tax revision using official tax tables from the finance ministry. The reform itself is not new. It was approved years ago and has been phased ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Kenya's competition regulator seeks reserve fund in Diageo's EABL sale
Kenya’s competition regulator has proposed that East African Breweries Ltd. set aside up to 15 billion Kenyan shillings ($115 million) in reserve funds before approving Diageo’s planned sale of its majority stake in the brewer to Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings, Business Insider Africa reported on August 18.

The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) wants the reserve to cover potential liabilities and third-party claims linked to EABL, according to Kenya’s Business Daily. The proposed condition has added another hurdle to a transaction that has already faced legal challenges.

Diageo, however, has rejected the proposal, saying there is “no basis whatsoever” for the conditions.

Diageo agreed in December 2025 to sell its 65% stake in EABL to Asahi for about $2.3 billion, valuing the East African brewer at roughly $4.8 billion, according to a Reuters report. The transaction would mark Asahi’s major expansion into Africa and Diageo’s exit from direct ownership of EABL.

EABL is one of East Africa’s largest consumer-goods companies, with operations spanning Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Its portfolio includes brands such as Tusker and Guinness.

The brewer reported KSh128.8 billion ($1 billion) in revenue for the financial year ended June 2025, up 4% from the previous year, while profit after tax rose 12% to ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Diageo headcount down more than 6%, annual report says
Diageo's total headcount fell more than 6% year-on-year by the end of June, its annual report showed, as the world's top spirits maker embarks on a restructuring under new CEO Dave Lewis, Reuters reported on August 18.

The company reported an average of 27,938 employees on a full-time equivalent basis, excluding staff of associates and joint ventures at the end of fiscal 2026, down from 29,860 in the previous year.

Most of the reductions across its regional markets are expected to be completed by September 1, implying that the final number of impacted staff could be higher.

Diageo declined to comment on Reuters' request seeking details about the job cuts.

Lewis, nicknamed "Drastic Dave" for his history of cost-cutting at Tesco and Unilever, had said the changes in headcount were focused on global back-office functions and areas of "massive duplication". He has been leading Diageo since January.

As part of a $1 billion savings plan, Diageo intends to lower prices on some brands and expand in fast-growing categories, including Guinness and canned cocktails.

In July, Reuters reported that some Diageo teams were cutting around 20% to 30% of their staff as part of deep reductions in overhead.

Brewery news Ghana: Accra Brewery calls for delay in beer excise duty hike
Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) has called on the government to defer the implementation of proposed increases in excise duties on locally manufactured beer, warning that the new rates could have far-reaching consequences for manufacturers, consumers, farmers, employment and investment, Modern Ghana reported on August 16.

ABL says postponing the implementation would provide government and industry stakeholders with more time to engage and find a tax framework that supports revenue mobilisation without undermining local production and economic growth.

The appeal was made by ABL Country Director, Thatokuhle Hlongwa, at the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) Second Quarter Business Barometer and Corporate Forum in Accra, which brought together government officials, business executives and other stakeholders to assess Ghana's business environment.

Under the newly approved reforms, the excise duty on locally manufactured beer is expected to increase from 32.5 per cent to 40 per cent, while the rate on beer produced with high levels of local raw materials, including cassava-based beer, will rise sharply from 10 per cent to 25 per cent.

The excise duty on imported beer, meanwhile, will remain at 47.5 per cent.

Mr Hlongwa cautioned that changes in excise taxation should not be viewed solely in terms of the immediate revenue they could generate for ...More info on site

WhiskyWhisky News Whisky

Whisky news Japan & India: Suntory targets US$1 billion sales in India by 2030
Suntory Global Spirits is targeting US$1 billion in annual sales in India by 2030 as it expands its presence in the world’s largest whisky market by volume. The strategy will combine locally produced Oaksmith whisky with imported brands including Jim Beam, Hibiki and Toki, The Spirits Business reported on August 19.

That would see India eclipse Europe, including the UK, as its third-largest market after the US and Japan. Last year sales in the subcontinent totalled approximately US$150 million.

The huge drive in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies will be based on its locally produced Oaksmith whisky brand supported by imported labels such as Jim Beam bourbon.

Suntory’s strategy is two-pronged, and unlike some competitors, it will not largely focus on premiumisation of expensive single malts or imported labels.

The biggest volume increases are planned to come in the mass and mid-premium Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) segments based on the locally produced Oaksmith, which will sell about two million cases this year.

The higher-priced market segments favoured by urban consumers will be met more by higher-margin imported brands such as Jim Beam bourbon and Japanese whiskies such as Hibiki and Toki.

India is the world’s largest whisky market by volume and Suntory’s drive further ...More info on site
