USA: AB InBev to invest additional $13 million into its Baldwinsville, NY brewery
|
Anheuser-Busch is pouring an additional $13 million into its Baldwinsville brewery, the company announced on August 20.
The reason, the brewing giant said, is partly to meet the growing demand for Michelob Ultra and Cutwater, two top-selling brands in the United States. Both brands are upgrading their production capabilities, including can and bottle lines.
To advance the company workforce for the future, the brewery is also opening a new technical skills training center. Baldwinsville is only one of the 15 total training centers opening their doors nationwide. Employees will receive training in mechanical, electrical, digital and operational areas, said Anheuser-Busch.
For Congressman John Mannion (D-22), the investment wasn’t always a guarantee.
“Many of us remember when we might have worried that it wouldn’t be here. But it has to do with the leadership, the workers, and the support from state and local partners to make sure that it happens here,” he said.
“And it’s the nimbleness that this facility can function to make sure that we meet those market demands.”
The Anheuser-Busch brewery already has a maintenance technician program, from which its first two employees recently graduated. The two went from being packaging operators to becoming electricians.

USA & Canada: US delays 50% tariff on Canadian beer imports by three days
|
The United States has delayed by three days the start of an additional 50% tariff on Canadian beer imports, pushing the measure’s effective time to 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Aug. 22 instead of Aug. 19, according to Reuters and an official tariff suspension proclamation reviewed alongside its annex, Vinetur reported.
The change does not lower the tariff rate. It only postpones when the added duty will begin to apply. The official annex expressly lists HTSUS 2203.00.00, the U.S. customs classification for beer made from malt, confirming that Canadian beer remains covered by the measure once the new deadline arrives.
The action gives U.S. importers, wholesalers and distributors a brief reprieve from an immediate increase in border costs, but it also leaves them with only a narrow window to adjust orders, pricing and logistics. Because the duty is ad valorem, it is charged as a share of the declared customs value of the imported product rather than as a fixed amount per unit.

Chinese brewer Huiquan Beer reported a sharp increase in first-half profit after raising revenue and improving its product mix, even though its beer sales volume appears to have slipped slightly, Vinetur reported on August 19.
Fujian Yanjing Huiquan Brewery Co., listed in Shanghai as Huiquan Beer, said in its half-year report that net profit attributable to shareholders rose 23.26% from a year earlier to 48.78 million yuan in January through June. Revenue increased 5.11% to 369.26 million yuan.
The company said it sold 119,300 kiloliters of beer in the first six months of the year, or about 1.193 million hectoliters. It also said revenue per kiloliter rose 6.50%. Taken together, those figures point to a small decline in physical sales volume. Based on the rounded growth rates disclosed by the company, volume appears to have fallen by about 1.3%, or roughly 1,600 kiloliters, although Huiquan did not publish a direct year-over-year volume change for total beer sales.

Diageo has agreed to reformulate some of its most popular whisky and rum drinks in India, two government sources told Reuters, after the country's food safety regulator banned them in some states for adding flavours that breached regulations, Reuters reported on August 17.
The food regulator will agree to drop its ban on this understanding, the sources said, in what is one of the world's largest spirits drink markets.
Diageo's India unit, United Spirits and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In India's biggest food safety crackdown in years, the regulator shocked the $40 billion industry early this month by banning several whisky and rum brands of Diageo and some other Indian companies, alleging mislabelling and improper addition of flavours - like rum flavour in rum.
Diageo, which has dubbed India its "consumer market of the decade", had said it complies with the law.
The whisky ban covered Diageo's hugely popular Antiquity Blue and Royal Challenge whisky made in Madhya Pradesh state, and its McDowell's No. 1 Celebration Matured XXX Rum made in Maharashtra.
