Brewery news Nigeria: Beer prices may rise as brewers battle N113bn H1 tax bill
Nigerians may soon pay more for beer as rising tax bills and high energy costs put pressure on the country’s major breweries, The Sun Nigeria reported on August 24.

Nigerian Breweries Plc, Guinness Nigeria Plc and International Breweries Plc recorded a combined N112.87 billion in tax expenses in the first half (H1) of 2026, up from N71.39 billion in the same period of 2025. This represents an increase of about 58 per cent.

The increase came as the companies continued to battle high electricity, gas, diesel, transportation and other operating costs.

The rising expenses could make it harder for the brewers to continue absorbing higher production costs, raising the possibility that some of the burden could eventually be passed on to consumers through higher beer prices.

Financial results filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) showed that the three companies recorded stronger profit before tax (PBT) during the period. However, higher tax charges reduced the amount of profit left after tax.

Nigerian Breweries recorded the highest tax expense at N63.37 billion, compared with N43.83 billion in H1 2025.

Its profit before tax increased by 18.2 per cent year-on-year (y/y) to N156.33 billion, while profit after tax rose by only 5.1 per cent to N92.95 billion.

Brewery news USA: Stone Brewing to cut 220 Escondido, California, jobs as production shifts
Sapporo USA reportedly plans to lay off 220 workers at three Stone Brewing locations in Escondido, California, as production of the craft beer brand shifts to facilities elsewhere in California and Missouri, Fox Business reported on August 24.

The layoffs will begin with 58 workers on Oct. 19, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letters filed by Sapporo with the state.

FOX Business has reached out to Sapporo USA for comment and confirmation of the total number of employees expected to be affected.

The workforce cuts follow Sapporo's sale of the Stone Brewing brand and select hospitality locations to Firestone Walker Brewing Company and Duvel Moortgat USA. The transaction was announced in April and closed May 15.

Under the deal, Stone beer production is transitioning from Escondido to Firestone Walker's brewery in Paso Robles, California, and Duvel USA's Boulevard brewery in Kansas City, Missouri.

The acquisition included Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens at Liberty Station in San Diego, along with taprooms in Little Italy, Oceanside and Pasadena. Stone's Escondido brewery and bistro were not included in the transaction.

When the deal was announced, Sapporo said it would continue producing Stone beer at its Escondido and Richmond, Virginia, breweries during a transition period. It also ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Constellation Brands committing an additional $100 million to support US farmers
Constellation Brands is committing an additional $100 million over the next five years to support farmers in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota, as the company seeks to strengthen a critical part of its beer supply chain, The Rochester Business Journal reported on August 24.

The incremental investment will include additional purchases from American farmers as well as initiatives aimed at helping growers maintain resilient, sustainable operations and strengthening the agricultural communities where they operate.

Constellation said the commitment comes as U.S. farmers face continued pressure from declining acreage, shifting consumer demand, rising input costs and weather-related challenges.

Barley, corn and hops are essential ingredients in beer production and support a supply chain that extends from farmers and maltsters to brewers, distributors, retailers, transportation companies and local communities, the company noted.

As part of the initiative, Constellation will work directly with growers in the three states to identify opportunities to support their operations over the long term.

The company also is establishing Constellation’s Farmers Future, a grower-led advisory committee that will bring together farmers, agricultural trade groups and community leaders. The group will help guide investments focused on agricultural resilience and the strength of the domestic agricultural supply chain.
