Brewery news Germany: German brewers disclosed lobbying talks with Berlin over falling beer consumption
Germany’s brewing industry has put falling beer consumption, the expansion of nonalcoholic beer, and alcohol prevention efforts at the center of its contacts with the federal government, according to a new filing in the German Bundestag’s lobby register, Vinetur reported on September 23.

The entry was submitted by the Deutscher Brauer-Bund, or German Brewers Association, and published on Sept. 23 in the public register used to disclose lobbying activity aimed at federal institutions. The matter is listed under the title “Market development of the brewing industry and prevention activities of the German Brewers Association.”

In its description, the association said it is in dialogue with representatives of the federal government about the current situation of the German brewing industry, declining beer consumption, the growth of nonalcoholic beers, and the group’s prevention work. It said those prevention activities focus on youth protection and the message that there should be no alcohol during pregnancy.

The register entry places the issue in two affected areas: the food and consumer goods industry and a broader health category. That pairing is notable because it shows the brewers’ group presenting the issue not only as a market question but also as one tied to public health and prevention.

Brewery news Vietnam: Camel Beer breaks ground on new beer and beverage plant in Can Tho city
Camel Beer Co., Ltd has broken ground on a VND2.78 trillion ($106.78 million) beer and beverage plant in Can Tho city, as the Vietnamese brewer expands its production capacity and distribution network in southern Vietnam, The Investor reported on September 22.

The Camel Hau Giang beer and beverage plant covers 10.7 hectares at Tan Phu Thanh Industrial Park. The first phase requires an investment of more than VND1.8 trillion ($69.19 million), with a capacity of 150 million liters a year. Commercial production is set for 2027.

Once fully operational, the plant will produce 200 million liters of beer and 200 million liters of non-alcoholic beverages annually.

According to the business’s financial plan, the facility is expected to generate average annual revenue of about VND5.7 trillion ($219.1 million) and contribute around VND1.5 trillion ($57.66 million) to the state budget.

At the groundbreaking ceremony last Sunday, Nguyen Thanh Long, Camel’s general director of domestic commercial operations, said the plant is expected to become one of its key production hubs in southern Vietnam.

The facility will allow Camel to strengthen its supply capacity and improve service and competitiveness, Long said.

Products manufactured at the plant will have faster access to markets in the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, ...More info on site

Brewery news India: B9 Beverages exploring a major restructuring and recapitalisation plan
Bira 91 maker B9 Beverages is exploring a major restructuring and recapitalisation plan, with the company’s newly reconstituted board, led by its largest lender Anicut Capital, offering to acquire the stakes held by key investors including Japan’s Kirin Holdings, Peak XV Partners and Belgium-based Sofina. The move comes as the financially stressed craft beer company seeks to bring existing stakeholders on board before raising fresh capital, Aabkari Times reported on September 23.

According to people familiar with the matter, prospective investors, including family offices and private equity firms, want existing backers who are unwilling to participate in the revival plan to exit before any new funding is injected into B9 Beverages. Kirin Holdings, Peak XV Partners and Sofina together hold around 41.1% of the company.

Kirin Holdings is the largest among these investors, with a 20.1% stake in B9 Beverages. The Japanese beverage company, which first invested in the maker of Bira 91 in 2021, has reportedly appointed EY to oversee the process of selling its stake. The proposed exit comes as Kirin reassesses its investment in the financially troubled Indian craft beer company.

Bira 91 founder Ankur Jain and his family previously held a 17.8% stake in B9 Beverages. However, their stake ...More info on site

Brewery news Denmark: Royal Unibrew moving production of beer brand Nørrebro Bryghus to improve efficiency
Royal Unibrew is moving production of beer brand Nørrebro Bryghus to another brewery in Denmark in a bid to improve efficiency.

The Danish brewer confirmed to the press production will move from its Baldersbrønde location, west of Copenhagen, to its Albani site in the city of Odense by the end of this year.

Royal Unibrew said the decision followed “an overall assessment of how we can best utilise production capacity across Royal Unibrew’s production network”.

“Consolidating production at Albani will allow us to make better use of our capacity and create a more efficient production setup,” the company added.

Following the production shift to the Albani facility, Baldersbrønde “will no longer form part of Royal Unibrew’s production footprint”.

Baldersbrønde is the group’s “smallest brewery in Denmark”, while Albani has “a well-established specialty/craft beer operation and available capacity to accommodate the production from Baldersbrønde”, the company said.

Albani produces mainstream beer brands including Albani and Ceres, as well as specialty beers such as Anarkist and Too Old To Die. The site also makes malt beverages.

Royal Unibrew currently operates four production sites in Denmark: Faxe, Albani in Odense, Frem in Ribe and Baldersbrønde. The closure will reduce that number to three.

The owner of Royal Beer brand employs around ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Malting barley premium under threat, grain growers group warns
Irish malting barley growers are potentially facing an extraordinary situation as malting barley, regarded as a premium crop, is being discussed at prices that could leave growers worse off than if they had grown spring feed barley, according to the Irish Grain Growers Group (IGGG), the Farmers Journal reported on September 23.

The group said that if the gap between malting and feed barley disappears or “what’s being spoken about where it actually goes into negative territory”, the fundamental economics of the crop have to be questioned.

IGGG highlighted that growing malting barley comes with additional risk and often extra costs.

Farmers are required to grow specific varieties, meet stringent quality specifications and accept the risk that a crop can fail to make malting grade and end up being paid for as feed even though it was managed as a malting barley crop, it said.

Boortmalt’s €10 grain handling charge must be scrapped the group also said, as it could result in a situation where feed barley will give a greater margin per hectare compared to malting barley.

"A farmer cannot be expected to take on the additional risk of producing a premium-quality raw material while receiving no meaningful financial reward for doing so."

The group ...More info on site
