UK: Molson Coors confirms Sharp’s Brewery by the end of the year
|
Sharp’s Brewery in Rock is set to close by the end of the year, with up to 40 jobs expected to be lost.
Owner Molson Coors Beverage Company confirmed on Tuesday, September 29, that production at the north Cornwall brewery will cease in December 2026 following the conclusion of a consultation process launched earlier this year.
The company said every alternative option had been considered but concluded the site was no longer financially sustainable as part of its national brewing network.
Since acquiring Sharp’s in 2011, Molson Coors says it has invested more than £20 million in the Rock brewery, expanding production capacity, upgrading equipment and supporting the development of the Sharp’s brand portfolio.
However, the company said changing consumer tastes and ongoing challenges facing the cask ale market had contributed to the decision.
The brewery's closure will mark the end of brewing operations at the Rock site, although Molson Coors said it is exploring a potential sale of the premises.
The company has agreed Heads of Terms with Camerons Brewery as its preferred brewing partner for key Sharp’s cask ale brands.
Production of Sharp’s keg and packaged beers will continue at Molson Coors breweries in Burton and Tadcaster.

China: Budweiser APAC’s beer sales now led by drinking at home
|
Budweiser APAC’s beer sales in China are now led by drinking at home, a shift that management says is continuing as restaurant demand weakens and fast local delivery grows from a small base, Vinetur reported on September 28.
According to a Sept. 28 report published by China Beer Industry Information Network, which cited a Sept. 23 research note from CLSA and management comments, home consumption now accounts for 50%-55% of Budweiser APAC’s total China volume. The restaurant channel has fallen from more than 30% of volume and is still losing share, while nightlife venues are holding roughly in the mid-teens.
The report points to a notable change in where the brewer is selling beer in its biggest market. It said the traditional on-premise business, especially restaurants, showed no sign of recovery during the summer peak season. Management linked that weakness to a soft macroeconomic backdrop, pressure on immediate consumption channels and unfavorable weather during months that usually support stronger beer demand.
The only channel still growing was O2O, or online-to-offline immediate retail delivery. Management said O2O volume in China rose at a double-digit year-over-year pace, although it still makes up only a mid-single-digit share of the brewer’s China volume. Even so, the company

Thailand: ThaiBev changes management structure and names a new president
|
Bangkok-headquartered Thai Beverage (ThaiBev) has changed its management structure and named a new president, The Spirits Business reported on September 28.
From 1 October, three senior executives within the group – which produces Chang beer and SangSom rum – will be promoted.
Current executive vice-president Sopon Racharaksa will become president and oversee ThaiBev’s operations. Racharaksa will stay on as chief people officer and as a member of the executive committee, but will no longer serve as chief of the firm’s spirits arm.
Kosit Suksingha will take over from Racharaksa as chief of the Spirits Product Group and remain chief of digital and technology. He will no longer head up the Non-Alcoholic Beverage Product arm – a role that will pass to Rahul John Colaco.
Colaco will also maintain his position as chief of brand and commercial.
ThaiBev said the changes will provide its executives with ‘broader responsibilities’, while ‘developing the next generation of leaders’ potential’ and supporting the continuation of sustainable business growth.
The company added that the new structure would enhance collaboration across its four product groups: spirits, beer, food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi will continue as chairman of the board of directors and as executive chairman of ThaiBev.
Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi will remain as director and

UK: Beer duty freeze could support 7,100 jobs, British Beer and Pub Association says
|
Britain’s main beer and pub trade group said on September 24 that freezing beer duty and increasing tax relief for draught beer in the next Budget could support or create 7,100 jobs across the sector, as brewers and pub operators press the government for tax relief after a duty increase earlier this year, Vinetur reported.
The British Beer and Pub Association, which represents brewers and pub companies in the United Kingdom, said about 3,400 of those jobs, or 47.9%, would go to people under 25. The group is asking the government to keep beer duty at its current rate and raise draught relief to 30%, arguing that the combination would help pubs keep prices down, protect investment and support hiring.
The call comes ahead of the government’s next fiscal statement and reflects wider pressure across the hospitality industry over labor costs, business rates and inflation. The BBPA said the 3.6% rise in beer duty that took effect in February has added £129 million a year to the cost base of British brewers. It also said that every additional 1% increase in duty removes £35 million in potential investment capacity from the sector.
The trade body said beer duty can account for as much

Ireland: Whisky industry calls for spirits excise duty cut by 10%
|
Ireland’s whisky industry is asking the government to cut spirits excise duty by 10% in the country’s 2027 budget, arguing that the sector is facing growing cost pressure even as global sales reached a record level last year and exports became less dependent on the United States, Vinetur reported.
The request was set out this week by the Irish Whisky Association, which said an immediate tax reduction is needed to support distillers, hospitality businesses and tourism operators. The group also called for more state help to develop markets outside the United States and for relief on energy, logistics and water costs. The proposal is an industry request and not a measure approved by the government.
The association said Irish whisky posted strong commercial results in 2025. Global sales reached 16.4 million cases, the highest level recorded for the category, while exports were worth €930 million. It also said the broader economic value linked to Irish whisky exceeded €5 billion last year. According to the group, Irish whisky was the only spirits category to gain market share in 2025.
Those figures come at a time when the industry says it is trying to adjust to a more uncertain trade environment. One of the clearest

UK: Workers at Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery in Fife begin 16 planned strike days
|
Workers at Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery in Fife began the first of 16 planned strike days on Monday, September 28, opening a labor dispute that unions say could disrupt production at one of the company’s most important spirits plants in Scotland, Vinetur reported.
Unite said more than 100 of its members joined the first walkout. GMB Scotland said its members also picketed outside the site as unions challenged Diageo’s plan to cut 10 operator jobs from a group of 72 positions at the distillery. That equals 13.9% of the operator workforce.
The strike is due to continue in stages through Oct. 15, with different groups of workers taking action on different days after Monday’s broader stoppage. Union officials said the rolling action is designed to target specific operations at the plant. GMB said it has notified the company of 16 strike days and is considering further action.
The dispute centers on the company’s restructuring plan and on how it handled consultations with employees. GMB said workers voted for industrial action after accusing Diageo of failing to properly consult on the job losses. The union said a seven-hour meeting between union representatives and management on Sunday did not produce an agreement and left workers more
