BreweryBrewery News Brewery

Brewery news USA: Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe, Maryland to close in November
Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe will close Nov. 1 after eight years amid changes in consumer preferences, Fox 5 News reported on October 1.

Guinness brand owner Diageo said Thursday that the company made the decision after reviewing operations and long-term business priorities. The brewery opened in 2018 with a taproom and restaurant as well as a beer production plant, which the company shut down in June 2023.

“Guinness remains one of our most important brands, and we are committed to investing in its long-term growth and success,” a Diageo spokesman said in a statement. “While our Baltimore brewery will close, our commitment to bringing Guinness to consumers around the world remains as strong as ever.”

A source familiar with the decision said the Baltimore brewery has become increasingly difficult to sustain as the company navigated increasing operating costs, shifts in consumer demand and broader economic pressures. The source said the company determined other alternatives and operating models were not viable.

Brewery news India: India's markets regulator approves Carlsberg's IPO pre-filing
India's markets regulator approved Danish brewer Carlsberg's confidential pre-filing for an initial public offering of its India business, a Securities and Exchange Board of India document showed on October 1, Reuters reported.

Carlsberg filed for the IPO confidentially in July, a route that allows companies to keep draft filings private until the launch.

The listing would not raise fresh capital, but allow the parent company to sell part of its stake, Reuters previously reported, citing two sources.

Carlsberg joins a growing number of multinational companies seeking to tap India's buoyant equity markets and monetise investments in the country.

The potential listing would add to an already busy year for India's IPO market, with planned offerings from Jio Platforms and the recently listed National Stock Exchange of India testing investor appetite.

Brewery news Namibia: Namibia Breweries Limited reports results for six months to June 30
Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) this week reported a sharp decline in beer export volumes to South Africa, citing a challenging trading environment and the expiration of a major supply agreement with Heineken Beverages South Africa, The Namibia Economist said on September 30.

Releasing its financial and operational results for the six months ended 30 June, 2026, the brewer revealed that export volumes to neighboring South Africa plummeted by 38.2 percent. The decline was attributed to the end of its minimum supply arrangement in April.

According to the NBL, the first half outcome is consistent with the downside scenarios previously communicated to the market, with the impact concentrated in the months following the transition to the new supply model.

Despite the significant decline in its primary export market, the company maintained a strong domestic performance in Namibia.

“The period, therefore, reflects two distinct dynamics: a resilient Namibian business that continued to gain total portfolio market share, and a structurally lower base for South African export volumes,” the brewer noted in the report.

In addition, NBL noted that consumer spending in Namibia remained under sustained affordability pressure, a trend already evident in 2025 and intensified by fuel and diesel price increases in April and May.

Brewery news Germany: Wolters brewery to close down after four centuries in business
German brewery Wolters, founded in 1627 in Brunswick, is shutting down after demand slumped, and some 90 employees have been told their jobs are at risk, The Brussels Times reported on September 29.

The closure underlines a broader fall in beer consumption that is being felt beyond Belgium and across Germany.

Brunswick Mayor Thorsten Kornblum called the shutdown “extremely painful.”

Wolters filed for insolvency earlier this year, citing declining sales, and efforts to find a buyer were unsuccessful.

Germany’s beer market has recorded its sharpest annual decline since reunification in 1990, according to federal statistics published in February. Sales fell by 6% last year, dropping below 80 million hectolitres.

The NGG trade union criticised the short period between the insolvency proceedings and the decision to close the brewery. “From the outside, the process looks more like an emergency stop than an orderly restructuring,” the union said.

The insolvency administrator said efforts were continuing to preserve the Wolters brand.

The Brunswick site’s managing director said the decision had been “inevitable.”

Several breweries in Germany have closed in recent years as beer consumption has continued to decline.

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors bets on nonalcoholic drinks with national expansion
Molson Coors has been broadening its US portfolio "beyond beer" for years as moderating alcohol consumption becomes the new norm, Yahoo! Finance reported on September 29.

Molson Coors' nonalcoholic beer portfolio also includes Blue Moon Non-Alcoholic, Peroni 0.0 and Coors Edge.

Despite these additions, Molson Coors is still investing in its beer portfolio and has looked to expand in RTD cocktails, recently purchasing Monaco Cocktails. The beverage giant said in a statement that it has set its sights on "scaling the right brands."

Coors 0.0, which launched in the Northeast in May, has become the No. 1 nonalcoholic beer innovation by volume sales, according to Circana data cited by Molson Coors. The company plans to further bolster the rollout with partnerships, media campaigns and retail activations.

Molson Coors brought Australian nonalcoholic cocktail brand Naked Life to the U.S. last year and saw "encouraging momentum" for the brand. Naked Life has 5 calories and no sugar, which the company said makes it "built for this moment" as more consumers cut back on alcohol and sugar consumption.

"The distributors who evolve to compete at the highest levels in both alcohol and non-alc won't have gotten lucky," Kevin Nitz, vice president of non-alc for Molson Coors, said in ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Asahi plans to launch Asahi Super Dry and Peroni Nastro Azzurro in Kenya
Asahi Group Holdings plans to introduce its Asahi Super Dry and Peroni Nastro Azzurro beers in Kenya after completing its majority investment in East African Breweries Plc (EABL), targeting growth in East Africa’s premium beer market, Food Business Middle East & Africa reported on October 1.

Asahi Group President and CEO Atsushi Katsuki told shareholders that the international brands would complement EABL’s existing premium offerings, including White Cap and Guinness Stout.

“Diageo Plc’s Guinness brand has established a solid market position in the premium category, but pilsners and other global mainstream premium lager brands have a limited presence,” Katsuki said.

“In my opinion, there is plenty of room for the Asahi Group to develop Asahi Super Dry and Peroni Nastro Azzurro premium lager and other brands in the region,” he added.

Asahi acquired Diageo’s 65% stake in EABL for $2.354 billion, alongside its interest in UDV Kenya. The transaction followed regulatory approvals across the East African markets where the businesses operate.

EABL operates mainly in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and owns brands including Tusker and Serengeti Lager, while continuing to produce and distribute selected Diageo brands under licensing agreements.

Katsuki said Asahi would leverage EABL’s distribution network to expand its international ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Russia to raise import duties on beer and spirits from ‘unfriendly’ countries
Russia is planning to raise import duties on beer and spirits from countries it calls “unfriendly” to €5 per liter starting Jan. 1, 2027, according to Reuters, which cited materials prepared for the country’s draft 2027-2029 budget, Vinetur reported.

For beer, the move would more than triple the current duty. The tariff is now set at €1.5 per liter and would rise to €5 per liter under the proposal. Russia last increased that rate in September 2025. Before that, it had lifted the duty to €1 per liter in January 2025 from an earlier €0.1 per liter.

The planned change would also affect strong alcohol imports. Spirits from “unfriendly countries,” a Russian designation that broadly covers most Western nations, are currently subject to a duty of 20% of their value, with a minimum charge of €3 per liter. Under the new proposal, that rate would move to €5 per liter.

Reuters reported that the higher duty on spirits could bring an additional 10 billion rubles a year into the Russian budget from 2027 through 2029. The same budget materials indicate that Russian authorities also plan to raise excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco by 6.5% in 2027.

The proposal follows earlier discussions inside the ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Heineken launches Amstel 0.0 beer
Heineken’s push to encourage new consumption occasions led the company to launch Amstel 0.0 in Brazil on September 30, a non-alcoholic, gluten-free version of the “all-malt” (puro malte) beer with 59.5 calories per 350-milliliter can, Valor International reported.

The marketing vice president of Heineken in Brazil, Cecília Bottai, says the investment comes after the consolidation of the non-alcoholic segment, which is now growing beyond the premium market.

“The initial focus was to build the image of zero beer. We wanted Heineken to be the protagonist. Now the segment has started to become more ‘mainstream’ [midpriced]. It has started to grow. And people are looking for more alternatives, more affordable products in this zero segment,” Bottai said.

In Brazil, all-malt beers stand in the premium segment and, by regulation, must be brewed only with barley. Other versions can have up to 45% content brewed with corn or rice.

In the past, non-alcoholic beers were not well received by consumers, but advances in technology have changed that. For the non-alcoholic versions of Heineken and Amstel, the beer is brewed with the same recipe, while the liquid then goes through an alcohol-removal process that keeps the taste close to that of the original.

The brewer plans to ...More info on site

HopsHops News Hops

Hops news USA: US hop inventories sharply down from last year
U.S. hop inventories declined sharply from a year earlier, reducing the amount of carryover supply held by growers, dealers and brewers. USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reports September 1 stocks totaled 105 million pounds, down 9% from 116 million pounds in 2025, RFD News reported on September 30.

Growers and dealers held 86 million pounds on September 1, while brewers held 19 million pounds. Total stocks were also well below the 136 million pounds reported on September 1, 2024.

The decline comes as the hop industry continues working through inventories accumulated across previous production years. Lower stocks can help bring available supplies more closely in line with brewer demand, although USDA’s report does not include prices or usage forecasts.

USDA surveys growers in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, along with hop dealers nationwide and the largest U.S. brewers. Stocks include the dry-bale equivalent of hops held as pellets or extract.

The next stocks report will provide another measure of how quickly inventories are being drawn down ahead of the 2027 production season.

WhiskyWhisky News Whisky

Whisky news India: Scotch whisky prices drop up to 26% in India after UK FTA
Scotch whisky drinkers in India are beginning to see lower prices, with major brands including Johnnie Walker Black Label and J&B becoming cheaper by up to 26% in some states following the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Acendants reported on October 2.

Diageo and Pernod Ricard, two of the largest Scotch whisky producers operating in India, have started adjusting prices after the trade agreement reduced import duties on British whisky. The first round of price cuts has already taken effect in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Goa and Uttar Pradesh, with more states expected to follow.

The reductions range between 10% and 15% for several products, although individual brands have seen different levels of price changes depending on the state.

The revised prices have already made a noticeable difference to the cost of some popular imported Scotch brands.

Diageo’s 750-ml Johnnie Walker Black Label is now selling for approximately Rs 3,800, down from its earlier price of Rs 4,250. This represents a reduction of around 10.6%.

J&B has recorded a bigger price change, falling to approximately Rs 1,700 from Rs 2,300 previously. That translates into a reduction of nearly 26%.

These changes mark the first major consumer price adjustments by the two leading Scotch producers since the ...More info on site
