Europe: Beer volumes slow in recent weeks after a stronger earlier stretch
|
Beer and carbonated soft drink volumes in Europe slowed in recent weeks after a stronger earlier stretch, while spirits continued to lag, according to UBS analysis of Nielsen off-trade data covering the four weeks ended Sept. 6, Vinetur reported on October 2.
UBS said beer volumes fell 3.1% in the latest four-week period, reversing from 4.6% growth in the previous four weeks. Even with that slowdown, beer volumes for the third quarter to date were still up 1%, compared with a 0.6% decline in the second quarter.
Carbonated soft drinks also lost pace. UBS said volumes grew 1.4% in the latest four weeks, down sharply from 9.2% in the prior four-week period. Third-quarter-to-date volumes were still ahead by 5.1%, compared with 1.7% growth in the second quarter.
Spirits remained the weakest part of the group. UBS said spirits volumes were down 4.9% in the latest four weeks, after a 5.6% decline in the previous period. For the third quarter to date, spirits were down 5%, a steeper drop than the 3.5% decline recorded in the second quarter.
The figures point to a cooler picture for Europe’s off-trade beverage market after earlier signs of resilience. For brewers and soft drink makers, that could mean closer

South Korea: Alcohol consumption falls below pandemic level in Korea
|
Korea's drinking culture, long built around traditions like "somaek," a mix of soju and beer, and company dinners known as hoesik, is shrinking. The decline is especially pronounced among younger Koreans, Korea Joongang Daily reported on October 3.
Alcohol shipments in Korea fell to 2.99 million kiloliters (789.9 million gallons) last year, the lowest level in 27 years, according to the National Tax Service. That is 5.2 percent below 2021, when social distancing rules at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic kept people from gathering.
That is not the picture many foreigners have of the country. On social media, soju, somaek and other soju-based cocktails remain a mainstay of Korean culture content. Many dream of coming to Korea to make their own soju whirlpool like their favorite K-pop stars, or to pair a glass of soju with convenience store snacks or a hot bowl of gukbap, the rice soup that often appears in Korean mukbang videos and K-dramas.
So why are Koreans drinking less, even as their own dramas and social media feeds showcase a colorful nightlife filled with an endless mix of liquors?
The shift stands out because Koreans have long been known as heavy drinkers, a reputation rooted in the once-notorious hoesik

USA: Midsize brewers shake up marketing strategies
|
As alcohol consumption continues to hover at 54% of the adult U.S. population, the lowest it’s been since at least 1939, brewers have had to get creative to reach consumers. From large brands such as Modelo, which is increasing its media investment by 18%, to smaller ones like Garage Beer, which has a new data center takedown campaign, brewers have looked for new ways to connect with consumers, Marketing Dive reported on October 2.
September saw two major players in the midsize beer space switch up their CMOs. Both Boston Beer and nonalcoholic brewer Athletic found new marketing heads as strategies shifted and budgets changed. The craft beer industry, which consists of smaller, independent brewers, seems split between growth and decline, with volume down in the first half of 2026 but outperforming the industry overall by 5.5 percentage points in 2025.
With Oktoberfest season in full swing, Marketing Dive has compiled some numbers that point to how beer brands outside the largest CPG players are navigating the evolving space.
Boston Beer, the company behind brands such as Truly and Dogfish Head, saw expenses related to advertising, promotion and selling increase 16.4% YoY in Q2. The company’s revenue fell 3.3% to $568.3 million

France: Heineken accelerates industrial investments in northern France
|
Heineken France is accelerating its industrial investments in the North. Since 2024, the group has invested €165 million in its breweries in Mons-en-Barœul and Marseille , including €118 million for the Mons-en-Barœul site alone, Entrevue reported on October 3.
The Mons-en-Barœul plant, the group's largest French brewery by volume, produced 3,4 million hectoliters in 2025, a record level for the site. It employs approximately 350 people and ranks among Heineken's top ten European breweries in terms of production capacity.
Located on 22 hectares, the brewery produces, among others, Heineken, Desperados, Affligem, Pelforth, Pelican, and Gallia. Its production facilities allow for up to twenty batches per day, with three bottling lines, one line dedicated to metal kegs, and one canning line. The output can reach 250,000 bottles and cans per hour. The site also preserves several historical elements, including a building dating from 1905 and a former brewhouse from 1925.
Heineken now aims to increase production at the site to 4,5 million hectoliters in the coming years. To support this ramp-up, the brewery has added a second brewhouse equipped with ten tanks. The group is thus relying on Mons-en-Barœul to strengthen its production capacity while maintaining a significant industrial presence in the Hauts-de- France

USA: Beer wholesalers cut September orders after the Beer Purchasers’ Index fell to 39
|
U.S. beer wholesalers entered the fall with weaker ordering plans in September, as the latest Beer Purchasers’ Index from the National Beer Wholesalers Association showed contraction across the category for a second straight month, Vinetur reported on October 5.
The overall September index came in at 39, well below the 50 level that separates expansion from contraction. The result means wholesalers, on balance, reported lower purchase intent than a month earlier. According to the industry update cited by Brewbound on Monday, the pullback extended beyond the overall market and into every segment tracked by the survey.
The September reading points to a soft start to the autumn selling season for the beer business. The association’s data showed that wholesalers were not only more cautious on total beer orders, but also less willing to increase purchases in individual parts of the category. That matters because wholesalers sit in the middle of the supply chain, and their buying patterns can offer an early signal of how brewers, importers and retailers may adjust in the weeks ahead.
A second measure in the report added to the cautious picture. The at-risk inventory indicator reached 54 in September, according to the monitor summary of the NBWA data. A

Japan: Japan's anti-trust watchdog raids four major brewers in price cartel probe
|
Japan's anti-trust body has searched the offices of four local brewing giants including Asahi and Sapporo, over allegations they breached the country's competition rules.
A report from local public broadcaster NHK World Japan said on October 7 offices were raided by the country's Fair Trade Commission on suspicion the brewers, which also include Kirin and Suntory Holdings, established a cartel to raise beer prices.
The four brewers' subsidiaries Suntory Spirits, Sapporo Breweries, Asahi Breweries and Kirin Brewery Company were the subject of the FTC's on-site investigations.
According to NHK World Japan, sources have said the companies are suspected of working together on when to raise beer prices and by how much in sales to wholesalers.
The four businesses raised prices in Japan in October 2022 and April 2025, citing elements such as rising costs of raw materials, the public broadcaster reported.
Kirin, Suntory, Asahi and Sapporo are all members of the Brewers Association of Japan. NHK Japan also reported that, according to sources, "section-chief-level officials had allegedly met to coordinate around prices and that "beer-like" beverages were included in those discussions.
According to financial news outlet Nikkei Asia, the Brewers Association has also been part of the FTC's probe. Just Drinks approached the association for comment

Germany: Beer sales edge up in August
|
German beer sales edged up in August as stronger exports offset another decline in the home market, underlining how much foreign demand is now helping support one of Europe’s largest brewing industries, Vinetur reported.
The German Brewers Association said on October 5 that total beer sales rose 0.4% from a year earlier to 6.64 million hectoliters in August 2026, an increase of about 27,000 hectoliters. The figures, based on data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, showed that the modest gain came entirely from trade abroad. Taxable domestic sales fell 1.2% to 5.39 million hectoliters, while beer exports climbed 8.3% to 1.24 million hectoliters.
Shipments to other European Union countries rose 9.3% to about 758,000 hectoliters. Exports to countries outside the EU increased 6.7% to about 484,000 hectoliters. That split matters for the broader drinks business because it points to weak demand from German consumers even as brewers find more support overseas, a pattern that could shape production, pricing, and investment decisions across beer and related beverage categories.
Despite the better August result, the industry remains below last year’s level over the first eight months of the year. From January through August, total beer sales fell 1.8% to 52.96 million hectoliters, or roughly 953,000

Germany: TCB group to take over brands and assets of insolvent Hofbrauhaus Wolters
|
Volksbank Brawo and its board member Heiner Arnoldi have designated a buyer for the insolvent Hofbrauhaus Wolters. According to a statement by the bank, the TCB group is slated to take over the Wolters brand family alongside other brand-related assets, Inside.Beer reported on October 2.
Production and bottling will transition into the TCB network, a move intended to preserve up to 40 jobs. This proposed deal favors the group over Privatbrauerei Wittingen, which had also submitted a comprehensive offer for the historic brewery that filed for insolvency in self-administration earlier this year.
The TCB group, led by founders Karsten Uhlmann and Mike Gärtner, produces around 7.4 million hectoliters annually across four locations. Primarily known as a major supplier of budget and private label beers for food retailers domestically and abroad, TCB also operates regional breweries. These include the former Holsten subsidiary Feldschlößchen in Dresden and the Gilde brewery in Hannover.
In addition to acquiring the brand rights, TCB's offer reportedly encompasses the brewery's real estate and machinery. Executives were recently seen at the Braunschweig site inspecting the equipment, notably the four-year-old dealcoholization plant and the returnable glass bottling line, which are expected to be relocated to the Gilde facility in Hannover as reported

Brazil: Brazil misses deadline for alcohol tax to start on Jan. 1, 2027
|
Brazil’s government has missed the deadline needed for the new Selective Tax on alcoholic beverages to begin on January 1, 2027, leaving breweries and other drinks producers without a defined tax rate for next year and adding uncertainty to pricing and production plans, Vinetur reported on October 5.
The missed date fell on Friday, October 2. Under Brazil’s 90-day notice rule for new taxes, known as the noventena, the government would have had to publish a provisional measure by that day for the tax to take effect at the start of 2027. Because that did not happen, the start of collection now moves back day by day, depending on when the measure is finally issued.
The Selective Tax will replace the Industrialized Products Tax, or IPI, on alcoholic beverages beginning in 2027 as part of Brazil’s broader tax overhaul. The levy, created by Constitutional Amendment 132 of 2023, is meant to discourage consumption of products that lawmakers consider harmful to health or the environment. In addition to alcohol, it is expected to apply to cigarettes, sugary drinks, polluting vehicles, minerals, aircraft and boats.
For brewers, the immediate problem is not only the delayed start date. It is also that the government still has

Germany: Oktoberfest ends with record number of visitors
|
Munich’s Oktoberfest has ended with a record 7.4 million visitors, making the 2026 edition the most attended in the festival’s history, TVP World reported on October 5.
The 16-day event at the Theresienwiese surpassed the previous record of 7.2 million visitors set in 2023. Attendance was also sharply higher than last year’s 6.5 million, helped by warm weather and stronger weekday turnout.
Visitors consumed about 6.7 million Maß (one-liter mug) servings of beer, while 447,000 people attended the Oide Wiesn, a section recreating the festival’s traditional atmosphere.
The festival remains one of Munich’s best-known international events.
This year’s edition ran from September 19 through October 4.
