UK: Carlsberg Britvic proposing to shut Burton-upon-Trent brewery
|
Marston's Brewery could close in Burton-upon-Trent, under plans revealed by its owners, Yahoo! Finance reported on October 8.
Carlsberg Britvic said it was proposing to shut the facility together with its primary logistics operation based at that site next summer. About 310 people are affected.
Burton-upon-Trent's connections with the brewing industry date back centuries, with the firm describing its own history and legacy in the town as "iconic".
However, it said the "stark reality" was that UK cask ale volumes had more than halved in less than a decade and "this trend looks set to continue across the UK".
The company said "priority brands" including Hobgoblin, McEwan's and Brooklyn were expected to remain in its portfolio, but it is unclear where they will be brewed.
Other, smaller brands could find a home under specialist or local brewers, the firm said.
Some have described Burton as the "beer capital of England", and at its height more than 30 breweries once operated from there.
The Staffordshire town's connection with beer dates back to the 11th Century when monks first started brewing, and Marston's own links to Burton date back more than 200 years.
Camra chairman Ash Corbett-Collins, who grew up in Burton, said statements from Carlsberg about understanding the importance

USA: Domestic beer shipments continued to fall through August
|
U.S. domestic beer shipments continued to fall through August, with taxable removals down 5% in the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to an unofficial estimate released on October 6 by the Beer Institute.
The trade group said brewers shipped an estimated 10.9 million barrels in August, down 3.5% from 11,296,310 barrels in August 2025. For the year to date, shipments totaled 91,461,227 barrels, compared with 96,312,962 barrels in the same January-through-August period last year. That is a decline of 4,851,735 barrels.
Taxable removals are a closely watched measure of beer shipped into the market on which federal excise taxes are paid. Because the figures track beer moving out of breweries and into distribution channels, they are often used as an early read on demand and industry activity in the United States.
The August estimate extends a run of year-over-year declines in 2026. According to the Beer Institute’s data, January shipments fell 15.2% from a year earlier, February declined 3.1%, March slipped 0.5%, April fell 3.7%, May dropped 6.8%, June declined 5.5%, July was down 2.8%, and August fell 3.5%.
March was the closest month to flat, while January posted the steepest drop of the year

Cameroon: Shareholders of Boissons du Cameroun approve full merger and absorption of Guinness Cameroon
|
Shareholders of Boissons du Cameroun (SABC), a subsidiary of Castel Group, have officially approved the full merger and absorption of Guinness Cameroon. The two entities will operate under a single unified legal structure starting January 1st, 2027, Trendtype reported on October 8.
In July 2022, Diageo agreed to sell its Guinness Cameroun brewery to Groupe Castel for £369m ($460m). The sale was formally completed in May 2023 following approval from regional competition authorities.
Under the arrangement, Diageo transitioned to an “asset-light” model in the country, earning royalties through a long-term licensing agreement while SABC handles the nationwide brewing, packaging, and distribution of Guinness products.
After the merger Guinness Cameroon will cease to operate as a separate subsidiary. All its operations and employees will be fully integrated under the SABC umbrella. The company has stated this will preserve local employment while leveraging Castel’s established logistics network to scale output and meet growing local demand for Guinness.
SABC has five production sites in Cameroon and distributes beer and soft drinks nationally. To secure regulatory approval for the Guinness acquisition, Castel Group committed to a five year CFAF 200bn ($340m) investment program between 2023 and 2027. These funds are designated for expanding production capacity, including outfitting new

USA: Flavor-focused beer sales posting growth in the USA
|
A flavor-led segment within traditional beer is posting growth in the United States even as the broader traditional beer business continues to decline, according to figures reported on October 6 by Beer Business Daily and attributed to Bump Williams Consulting, Vinetur said.
The data put cumulative sales for flavor-focused traditional beer at about $1.7 billion. Bump Williams Consulting said that segment is growing at a 4.4% rate, compared with a 2.9% decline for traditional beer overall.
The figures point to a notable contrast inside one of the country’s largest beverage categories. While standard beer sales remain under pressure, the report suggests that products positioned around flavor are attracting enough consumer demand to expand in dollar terms. That makes the segment one of the clearer growth areas available to brewers and distributors that want to remain in traditional beer rather than shift investment entirely to adjacent categories.
Beer Business Daily described the trend as evidence that traditional beer is still finding growth through flavor. Based on the figures cited, the change is not yet large enough to offset broader weakness across the full traditional beer market, but it does indicate that some beer consumers are still responding to new taste profiles and line extensions

Germany: Eichbaum Brewery ends beer production in Mannheim after nearly 350 years
|
Brauerei Eichbaum, an insolvent brewery in Mannheim, has brewed its last beer after nearly 350 years, closing a production chapter for one of Germany’s long-established regional beer names. The company said production ended on September 30 and that operating business activities will cease no later than December 31, Vinetur reported on October 2.
The shutdown affects 181 jobs. The company said management and the works council have agreed on a reconciliation of interests and a social plan for employees. Eichbaum says it was founded in 1679.
Even as brewing stops in Mannheim, the Eichbaum brand is expected to continue. According to earlier company information, Park & Bellheimer, a brewery based in Pirmasens, is set to take over the brand of the traditional Mannheim brewer. Eichbaum said its beers will remain available in restaurants and bars, through beverage wholesalers and in food retail stores. The brand business is to be concentrated in Eichbaum-Vertriebs GmbH, a sales company based in Mannheim.
The brewery filed for insolvency proceedings under self-administration at the end of October 2025. According to the company, export sales had declined and domestic demand had also weakened, leading to a liquidity shortfall. Those pressures left the business unable to continue production at the

The Czech Republic: Traditional Ostravar brewery facing closure
|
After decades of beer production, the traditional Ostravar brewery in Ostrava is facing closure. Production is to be gradually phased out over the course of next year. However, the well-known beer brand will remain on the market and will be produced at the Staropramen brewery in Prague-Smíchov in future, the Prague Daily News reported on October 9.
The Czech brewing group Pivovary Staropramen has announced that it will completely cease beer production at its Ostrava site next year. The reasons behind the decision are the long-term decline in beer consumption, rising production costs and the need to adjust existing brewing capacities.
According to the company, the Czech brewing industry has been under economic pressure for years. In addition to declining beer consumption, higher costs for energy, packaging materials and transport are placing a particular burden on production.
By relocating production to Prague, the brewing group aims to make more efficient use of its existing production capacities and remain competitive in the long term.
“This is one of the most difficult decisions we have had to make in recent years,” said Martin Čermák, Country Lead for the Czech Republic and Slovakia at Pivovary Staropramen. Ostravar is far more than just a brewery. Over generations, the

World: Castel heiress wins court ruling against CEO in family power struggle
|
Romy Castel, daughter of the founder of French drinks giant Castel, has won a Singapore court ruling confirming the removal of group CEO Gregory Clerc from a board within its ownership structure, marking a victory in a family power struggle without displacing him as head of the business, Vino Joy News reported on October 9.
Singapore’s High Court confirmed the validity of her votes to remove Clerc and Pierre François Alec Baer from the board of Investment Beverage Business Management Pte Ltd., or IBBM. Baer was also IBBM’s CEO and chairman.
The ruling concerns a company within the complex network of funds, trusts and holding companies behind Castel, whose businesses span wine, beer, soft drinks and agriculture. It does not remove Clerc as group CEO or establish that control of the group has changed hands.
In an October 2 statement, Romy’s side said the decision upheld her voting rights and the resolutions passed at a February 2 extraordinary general meeting to remove the two directors.
Romy said the outcome respected shareholders’ wishes and would help establish more transparent, professional governance. She accused Clerc of betraying her father Pierre Castel’s trust and said she would work with her cousin Philippe Castel, CEO of Castel Vins,

South Korea: Korea loses 1,900 beer pubs in a year as drinking declines
|
Beer pubs, long the default venue for after-work company dinners in South Korea, are disappearing fast. High inflation has pushed up dining costs, while a shift away from company dinners and second-round drinking has cut alcohol consumption itself. The number of beer pubs, once above 30,000, has now fallen below 20,000, Seoul Economics Daily reported on October 8.
The number of beer pub operators nationwide stood at 19,507 as of August this year, according to National Tax Service data released on the 8th. That is down 1,894, or 8.9%, from 21,401 a year earlier. The figure fell below 20,000 for the first time in May, to 19,863, and has kept declining since.
Beer pub operators numbered more than 30,000 until the COVID-19 pandemic. The total slipped below that mark in November 2020, to 29,872, and has fallen steadily since. Smaller drinking establishments show a similar pattern. Their operators totaled 7,775 as of August, down 717, or 8.5%, from 8,492 a year earlier.
The trend cannot be attributed to conditions for small business owners alone. Koreans are drinking less. Domestic alcohol shipments totaled 2,987,726 kiloliters last year, down 5.2% from 3,151,371 kiloliters a year earlier. That is the lowest level since the data series

USA: Anheuser-Busch pours into hops research in the Pacific Northwest
|
A brewing giant is pouring into hops research in the Pacific Northwest, Yahoo reported on October 8.
Earlier this week, Anheuser-Busch — the manufacturer behind brands like Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and Cutwater — disclosed a $65,000 investment into the region's hops industry. The St. Louis-based company announced that the award will benefit projects led by Oregon State University and the Hop Research Council.
The projects will examine hop storage and age impacts, according to Anheuser-Busch. Researchers will also assess factors like plant pathology and wildfire smoke's effect on hop plants.
OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences describes the plant as a "long-lived perennial in which the female flowers are used as a preservative, flavoring, and bittering agent in beer." Experts have noted Oregon, Washington and Idaho are leading states for commercial hop production.
The new research grant could help farmers better prepare for their annual harvest, while also informing brewers and other stakeholders in the beer industry, according to Anheuser-Busch.
Tom Shellhammer, OSU's "Nor'Wester Professor of Fermentation Science," said the brewing giant has supported hops researchers throughout the region and throughout the nation for more than 30 years.
"This investment will enable us to further explore new approaches and generate practical knowledge that can support local
