0 Russia: Sun Interbrew launches US$148-mln three-year bonds on MICEX

Sun Interbrew Finance, a special-purpose vehicle of Sun Interbrew Limited in Russia, said August 17 it had started floating three-year bonds worth RUR4 billion (about US$148 million) on the Moscow Inter-Bank Currency Exchange (MICEX), RIA Novosti released August 17.

"The placement of Sun Interbrew Finance Series 02 unconvertible interest-bearing documentary bearer bonds, with mandatory centralized custody, has started," the MICEX said in a press release.

Bonds, with a nominal cost of RUR1,000 (about US$37) per bond, will be floated via public subscription at 100% of par value. Raiffeisenbank Austria is the bonds' seller on the MICEX, the press release said.

The bonds will mature August 13, 2009, the MICEX said.

SUN Interbrew Limited was set up in 1999 after a merger of InBev brewery and the SUN group. In Russia, the company sells famous foreign beers such as Stella, Beck's and Staropramen, as well as popular Russian varieties like Klinskoye, Sibirskaya Korona and Tolstyak. It also sells Stella, Beck's, Chernigovskoye, Rogan and Taller in Ukraine.

0 Thailand: Singha Corp plans to build a new THB4 million brewery boosting total brewing capacity to 15,500 hl

Singha Corporation, formerly Boon Rawd Brewery, the country's second-largest beer producer, is to boost its capital expenditure over the next two years by 25% to THB5 billion, up from THB4 billion under an earlier plan, Bangkok Post posted August 17.

President Santi Bhirombhakdi said an increase in investment was aimed at supporting its plan to build a third brewery in a province in the central plains, requiring an investment of THB4 billion.

Construction of its new factory, located on a 150-rai plot, will begin next year and drive the total annual capacity of Singha beer to 1,550 million litres, up from the combined capacity at its existing breweries in Pathum Thani and Khon Kaen of 1,150 million litres. The additional output will serve both local and international markets.

THB1 billion of the funds will be used for future joint ventures with overseas partners and the capacity expansion of its packaging facility at Bangkok Glass Industry Co Ltd, in which it holds a 50% stake.

He said the firm was in talks with possible partners in three countries to establish joint-venture firms, in which Singha and its partners would hold equal stakes.

"Staying independent makes it hard to expand. Forming joint ventures ...

Genetically Modified Barley and the Brewing Industry

University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN, USA.

ABSTRACT
All crops used in the production of beer, with the exception of hops, can be genetically modified (GM). While barley is being genetically modified for research purposes and will likely be commercialized in the near future, other GM crops such as corn and rice are in commercial production. This review addresses the impact of GM barley and other GM crops on the brewing industry. Specific topics include: (i) the history and status of plant genetic engineering technologies with emphasis on barley and other cereals, (ii) GM crops and traits currently in production and those that are being developed for future commercialization, (iii) concerns, risks, and benefits of GM crops including barley and crops used as brewing ingredients, and (iv) methods for detection of GM ingredients.
