Brewery News

0 Belgium: InBev confirms beer sales improved by 4.6% in the third quarter 2006

InBev, the world’s leading brewer by volume, announced November 08 its results for the third quarter of 2006 (3Q06):

Organic volume growth driven by developing markets: organic beer sales volume grew +4.6% in 3Q06 versus the third quarter of 2005 (3Q05), primarily as a function of strong beer growth in Central & Eastern Europe (+14.8%) and Latin America (+4.8%), providing further evidence of the company’s attractive growth profile. Beer volume growth in North America (-2.4%) and Western Europe (-2.5%) remained under pressure, confirming the need to continue reducing costs to be able to invest in future growth

Continued revenue growth: revenue increased organically by +7.1% year-on-year (yoy), as a combination of higher volumes and effective revenue management initiatives; the latter drove an organic +1.6% increase in revenue per Hl yoy

Solid cost management: once more consolidated cost of sales (CoS) and operating expenses were kept under tight control. The company continued to benefit from the implementation of our plant optimization and Zero Based Budgeting (ZBB) programs, which when combined with the company’s procurement efforts, are designed to keep the overall cost base growing below average inflation, in line with InBev’s long-term goals. During the quarter organic CoS per Hl improved by +2.7% and ...

0 Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries reports 15% organic growth in Attributable Net Profit for FY2006

Main board listed Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (APB) reported November 10 record high revenue, profit before interest and taxation (PBIT) and attributable net profit before exceptional items for the full year ended 30 September 2006.

Group profit before interest and tax (PBIT) grew 16% or S$35.4 million to S$254.7 million. Excluding the one-off adjustment on royalties of S$20.7 million, translation losses, gestation losses from new businesses and business development related costs, PBIT grew organically by S$29 million or 13% as compared to the previous year.

Attributable net profit before exceptional items achieved growth of 15% or S$17.2 million to S$131.6 million. Without taking into account the one-off adjustment on royalties of S$16.5 million, translation losses, gestation losses from new businesses and business development related costs, group attributable profit before exceptional items also grew 15% organically or S$16.9 million.

During the year, its operations in Vietnam reached an agreement on royalty rates payable for the past years. This has resulted in a one-time cancellation of royalties previously charged to the operations for prior years for an amount of S$31.6 million.

A sum of S$10.9 million of this benefit which relates to inter-company royalties has been eliminated on consolidation at Corporate Office level. The remaining S$20.7 ...

Barley News

0 EU: Experts envisaged three ways to attenuate the impact of poor barley crop on maltsters

Referring to the EU difficult barley crops and markets, experts stressed out October 31st that there are three possibilities to ration barley supplies to malting companies:

a) higher prices,
b) usage of lower quality barley and
c) a lower malt production.

The market trend to-date indicates that many maltsters and/or brewers have insisted on high quality barley deliveries and have therefore driven up market prices.

The lower quality sector shows a number of limitations: malting barley with handicaps of protein, screenings, germination and pregermination has become very expensive as well, and is not readily available anyway.

First test results of malted feed barley show a poor malt quality, as had to be expected. Therefore the risk of a lesser malt production and a malt short next spring remains a strong possibility.

0 USA: Cargill prefigures a more secure barley marketing option for North Dakota barley growers

Representatives from Cargill Malt in North Dakota are meeting barley farmers across the state to discuss the benefits of grower contracts, Food navigator released November 08.

The first two grower meetings, held in Jamestown on November 08, are designed to provide farmers with the opportunity to obtain information on contract prices and varieties. The company said that farmers looking to maximize the value of their crop for malting-quality barley for the 2007 season should attend.

“Cargill has moved forward with construction to significantly expand its processing capacity at the malting plant in Spiritwood, located in the heart of the nation's top barley-producing state,” said John Zietz, barley supply chain manager, Cargill Malt.
"This project will enhance Cargill's competitive position in the North American malting industry and provides a more secure barley marketing option for North Dakota producers."

For this reason, Cargill Malt plans to increase both the number of grower participants and the amount of acreage in its 2007 program. Grower contracts may be limited and future contract price offerings are subject to change.

“Cargill has the only malting facility in the state; we're right there locally on the ground in North Dakota, which offers a competitive advantage to North Dakota barley ...
