1. Industry news

Heineken is in conflict with Beverage Associates (BAC) Corp and Quilmes Industrial (Quinsa) S.A- its subsidiary and has already sued them at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris . The cause that has generated this dispute was the conclusion of a transaction by Quinsa and BAC with the Brazilian brewery Ambev, which grants Ambev the right to purchase the BAC's stake in Quinsa and to introduce its operations and brands in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia. A fierce price war is escalating in Japan. After important Japanese breweries such as Suntory, Sapporo, Asahi have diminished the prices for their happoshu brands , another brewery- Kirin has announced about his intent to reduce the price for its happoshu brand "Tanrei". According to the Kirin's statement , from the 21st of June ,a 350 ml can of "Tanrei" will no longer cost Y145 but Y135. And this is not the single reduction which Kirin intends to accomplish in this season, the brewer has said also .......[www.e-malt.com]

Belhaven Brewery Group from Scotland has announced that for this year its turnover has increased by 25% to EUR 69 mln and its pre-tax profit rose by 23 % to EUR 9,2 mln . Besides this good news , the Scottish brewer has revealed that it had concluded a supply and distribution contract with Tennent Caledonian Breweries (TCB) . Saku Olletehas, an important Estonian brewery , undertakes action to bring Carlsberg brand on the first positions on the Estonian beer market.In order to attain this goal , Saku Olletehas has launched a new line of Carlsberg beer. The bottles from this line are of half liter and returnable.

In 2001 Spain has produced and sold more beer than it did last year. In this year Spanish beer production has registered a growth of 4,9% and has reached the volume of 27.7mln hectoliters while beer sales have amounted to 26.96 mln hectoliters which is an year -on-year increase of 4,7%.

After SAB has bought the American Miller and formed by this merger the second largest brewer in the world , Belgian Interbrew , has fallen on the third place in the world top of brewers. This event is considered to be the main cause of an intention appertaining to an important group of family shareholders that wish to dilute their shareholdings in Interbrew . 2. Malt markets and prices.

Domestic EU business has been quiet this past week. The few groups who still need to buy are carefully following the downward trend of the barley markets. Latin America has started inquiries for delivery first half 2003.
