Brewery News

0 USA: New study shows beer industry contributes $190 billion annually to U.S. economy

America’s beer industry, made up of brewers, beer importers, beer distributors, brewer suppliers, and retailers, directly and indirectly contributes nearly $190 billion annually to the U.S. economy according to a new economic impact study, Beer Institute announced April 23. The industry’s economic impact includes more than 1.7 million jobs—paying almost $55 billion in wages—as well as more than $36 billion in federal, state, and local taxes. The study of 2006 data was commissioned by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA).

“This study shows that more than ever, America’s brewers play a pivotal role in promoting strong and robust economic growth throughout our country,” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer, Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., and chairman of the Beer Institute. “Brewers in all 50 states have been supporting the economy in their communities for generations, creating jobs for their neighbors, tax revenue for public services, and promoting alcohol awareness responsibility initiatives for retailers, schools, and families.”

According to the study, the direct output of brewers, importers, beer distributors, and retailers into the American economy is almost $90 billion each year. The beer industry directly employs more than 900,000 Americans, paying them more than ...

0 Belgium: Inbev aims India, Latin America, Russia and China as targets for future acquisitions

Inbev SA chief executive Carlos Brito said the brewer has India, Latin America, Russia and China on its radar screen for acquisition opportunities, according to AFX News Limited, April 24.

He mentioned Colombia and Mexico as specific targets within Latin America.

On general industry consolidation, Brito said the group continues to monitor opportunities to "increase or enhance" the group's current global operations or enter into new markets.

He commented however that 95 pct of the group's resources are geared towards managing current operations.

Brito said that the group continues its strategy to move from "biggest to best", with profitability one of the key criteria used by the Leuven-based brewer.

He said that while the group has new internal targets, it is not disclosing them publicly. The group reached its long-standing target of a 30 pct EBITDA margin one year ahead of schedule.

Inbev chairman Peter Harf said the group's discussions with ex-CEO John Brock over his golden handshake package were "ongoing". He added that no legal case had been filed at present.

Separately, CEO Brito said the group respects the European Commission's ruling last week on an illegal cartel in the Dutch beer market.

Inbev says that it has put in place measures to ensure its operations fully ...

0 Germany: Cheap beer tradition under threat from biofuels

As barley is increasingly displaced in the country's fields by heavily subsidised crops used for biofuels, the price of beer will certainly rise, AFP reported April 22.

"Many brewers have no choice but to raise their prices. They decided not to pass on the three-percentage point rise in value-added tax that came into force in Germany on January 1, but in this case they have no alternative," said Kai Schuerholt, a spokesman for the German brewers' association.

The German arm of Belgian brewer InBev, which owns the Beck's and Franziskaner brands, confirmed it would be implementing "slight" price rises, while Germany's Radeberger said it was considering a similar move.

It is hard to overstate the importance of beer in Germany - it is drunk in vast quantities and the market is fiercely competitive and extremely price-sensitive.

A half-litre glass currently costs as little as three euros (four dollars) in a bar or restaurant, a price to leave drinkers in most other western European countries green with envy.

Average yearly consumption of beer in Germany last year was 111.6 litres per head, equivalent to every one of the country's 82 million people drinking a 0.31-litre glass every day, according to figures released on Friday.

But the ...

0 Canada: Maltsters want Ottawa to delay barley monopoly end

Ottawa should wait until August 1, 2008, to put its new barley marketing regulations into effect to give maltsters time to fill or unwind existing contracts, Canada's two largest malting companies said, according to Reuters, April 23.

Maltsters have made significant sales based on contracts for barley supplies with the Canadian Wheat Board beyond August 1, 2007 -- the date Canada's agriculture minister has set for the agency to lose its sales monopoly, said Robert Meijer, spokesman for Prairie Malt Ltd., owned jointly by Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and Cargill Ltd.

"We can push (the date) back, or the wheat board and the government, I suspect, will be held fully accountable for the liability this is going to create in terms of costs," Meijer said.

Maltsters have told government officials, including Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl, that the liability would be in the "high tens of millions" of dollars, Meijer said.

Farmers' barley deliveries have already slowed because of market uncertainty about the August 1 change, and all players in the industry stand to be harmed, said Steven Gorst, president of privately held Canada Malting Co. Ltd., the country's largest maltster.

"Currently it does not seem the government has fully grasped the problems an abrupt change will ...
