1. Industry news
Carlsberg Malaysia will produce and distribute the Thai Chang beer brand in Malaysia. The licensing agreement on beer brands and alcohol-free varieties is a long term one and is valid till 2012.
Carlsberg Malaysia hopes to gain good group results in the long term out of this deal. However, they donlt expect to obtain a financial effect on results for the current year 2002. The agreement might be imposed the conditions of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry or other government authorities.
Mexican brewer, Grupo Modelo, has registered MXN9.60 billion sales in the second quarter of year 2002, which is 5.4% up from the corresponding period of previous year. The second quarter noticed an increase of 5.6% in produced volumes year-to-year up to 11.1 million hl.
In the first half of year 2002, Modelo registered MXN17.64 billion sales, a rose by 6.5%. Net Profit for the first six months rose by 20.21% up to MXN2.32 billion, while operating profit increased by 10.23% up to MXN4.85 billion.
Belgian brewing group, Interbrew, which currently owns 40.92% of Pivovarna Union's shares, has declared that on July 22 it received from the Slovenian regulators the approval to launch a public tender offer for purchasing the remaining voting shares of Pivovarna Union, which it doesn't own yet.
Last week, Interbrew's rival, Slovenian brewer, Lasko, launched a takeover bid for Pivovarna Union, which failed, thanks to Slovenian anti-monopoly regulators.
The Interbrew's tender offer will start on July 23 2002 and be valid for 28 days.
The Minnesota brewer, August Schell Brewing Co., made public its acquisition of the Grain Belt beer brand from the bankrupt Minnesota Brewing Company. However, the financial details of the deal were not revealed.
Cisneros Group, the Venezuelan media combine, made an investment in Latin American beer market by purchasing 16% of the voting shares of the Peruvian brewer, Backus & Johnson, for the amount of about $ 200 million..... www.e-malt.com

Empresas Polar, Venezuelan brewing giant, has submitted to Peruvian regulators the request to avert Colambials Bavaria from enlarging its stake in local brewer Backus & Johnston.....www.e-malt.com
Ukraine's malt imports suffered a decline of 15.3% down to 13,570 tons during the first five months of 2002, if compared with the corresponding period of 2001. However, this period registered some positive tendencies of malt imports, State Statistics Committee (SSC) reveals.....www.e-malt.com
The Belgian brewing group, Interbrew, made an announcement about a counter-bid against Pivorvarna Lasko, Slovenian leading brewer, which on July 17 advertised in a Slovenian daily newspaper about the made acquisition of 21.94% in the Pivovarna Union, country's second largest beer company, thereby increasing its participation in the company to 46.18%.....www.e-malt.com
