1. Industry news

Czech breweries increased their sales by 4% to 8.9 million hl of beer in the first half of 2002, compared to the same period last year, Czech Brewing and Malting Association reveals. This result was obtained due to the hot weather, which made the beer demand grows, a phenomenon occurred in several East European countries. The Association said many Czech breweries are running full capacity. It also predicted a 3% rise of beer output by the end of 2002. Exports of Czech beer rose about 17% to 1.8 million hl. Czech breweries export their beer manly to Germany, Slovakia, the US and Poland. Czech beer market itself is a prolific one, as the Czech Republic claims the highest per capita beer consumption in the world. 156 litres of beer per capita were registered last year in the country.

The largest Chinese brewer, Tsingtao Brewery Company, and the world's largest brewer Anheuser-Busch from US, declared yesterday about their plan to merge into a strategic alliance. The terms of partnership are in the process of completion and will be the subject of Chinese government approval. However, the two companies have already signed an exclusive agreement. Tsingtao has an 11% market share in Chinese area with its Tsingtao brand, the number-one brand in China. Now, the Tsingtao brand beer is sold in over 40 countries and regions abroad..... www.e-malt.com

Japan's second largest brewer, Kirin Brewery, is looking to renew its position by enlarging its business in China, considered by it a beer prolific area. The company expects that China will become its biggest production base within five years. Naomichi Asano, CEO of Kirin's international division, said: "Asia has plenty of room for growth so that's where we are focusing.... In five years' time we will expand from being a Japanese beer company to a leader in Asia. Then we will look at becoming a top global operator.".... www.e-malt.com

Russian brewer, Bravo International, which is an ownership of Heineken from April, has registered an increase of 16% in beer output in the first half of 2002. Bravo owns a 17% stake in St. Petersburg beer market and 7% stake in Moscow beer market. In 2001, it produced 2.4 million hl of beer, with its main brands Okhota, Bochkaryov and Lowenbrau.

On July 25, Interbrew, the Belgian brewer, declared in a press release that it will acquire a 24% share in the China’s third-largest brewery, Zhujiang Brewery of Guangdong. This move will be made according to the Framework Agreement signed by the parties on July 10, 2002. Full details of the deal are expected in September when negotiations are finalized. Interbrew has plans for further acquisition of Zhujiang shares in conformity with Chinese legislation.

2. Malt markets and prices

In the expectation of the new barley crop, malt markets are quiet. So far overall good qualities have been harvested. France: 6rW Esterel good quality and quantity, 2rS almost done, some small localized high protein problems. U.K.: 2rW almost done, quality fine, spring barley not yet begun. Germany: the South regions harvested good quantity and quality. Denmark: still needs to start.
