1. Industry news
The Japanese brewer, Sapporo Breweries, is going to issue another "hopposhu" beer-like alcoholic beverage called "Brau Honsuguri" by mid-September.
The new brand will replace the company's existing happoshu "Fine Lager", which didn't have much success in selling. Moreover, company's rival Kirin Brewery, claims that the Fine Lager label resembles that of Kirin's leading brand "Lager Beer".
The prices of beer and "happoshu" beer-like beverage, with low content of malt, are expected to rise about Y4 per 350-milliliter can at Japanese retail stores.
Kirin, the Japanese brewing giant, managed to reproduce an absolutely antique kind of beer from an Egyptian recipe dating back more than 4,400 years, company’s officials proudly revealed on August 2, 2002.
Ostankinsky, the Moscow-based brewer, has registered positive tendencies in the first half of the year: 49% rise in output to 2.55 million deciliters and 91% up of turnover. Ostankinsky is owned by its senior management. In 2001 the company registered an output of 3.9 million deciliters of beer and a net profit of RR15.3 million. But the brewery doesn’t use its full annual capacity of 8.5 million deciliters.
Empresas Polar, the Venezuelan brewing giant, intends to invest around $1.6 million in launching a new brand, named Vox. The new brand will be a lemon-flavored beer with 4% of alcohol content. Venezuelan market will meet a fruit-flavored beer for the first time.
Out of this deal Empresas Polar hopes to gain a 1.4% stake of Venezuelan beer market within three months.
Anheuser-Bush, the US brewing giant, intends to raise its stake in the Chinese brewery, Tsingtao, from 5% to 27%, reports of Chinese press reveal. According to the same sources, Anheuser-Busch will pay around HK$1.2 billion to acquire the additional shares. This information was issued after the last week announcement about the signed strategic agreement between the two companies.
Carlsberg, the Danish brewing group, has purchased a 67% share of Prinsko Pivo, the Bulgarian brewer, from a group of institutional and private investors. The value of deal is undisclosed. In conformity with the Bulgarian law, the company must now make a public offer for the remaining shares in Prinsko Pivo.....www.e-malt.com

2. Malt markets and prices
Some brewers in Asia and South America took advantage of the present market situation and purchased some their 2003/04 needs. On one hand we have the very low malting barley market in the EU, though market's are climbing, and on the other hand the reports of smaller export surplus in Canada and Australia, made the brewers react and buy good quantities at very attractive prices.
