Carlsberg Breweries A/S signed an agreement giving Carib Brewery Ltd. the rights to brew and distribute Carlsberg Beer in Trinidad & Tobago, along with other selected Caribbean markets. Carlsberg's new partner, Carib Breweries, is part of the ANSA McAl Group of companies, which is one of the biggest corporations in the Caribbean region. "The Caribbean region is a window to the world. Around 22 million international tourists visited the region in 2001, half of which came from the US, but also many from Europe… The Carib Breweries has a long tradition of exporting Carib Beer throughout the Caribbean, making Carib a leading regional brand and a strong strategic partner in the area for Carlsberg," said Søren Holm Jensen, Carlsberg Breweries' vice-president, Export, Licence and Duty Free. The Carlsberg brand will add a world-renowned premium lager to Carib's portfolio of popular beers and beverages in the region.

The Danish brewer, Harboes Bryggeri, has registered positive tendencies for the first half of 2002. They have reported a net profit of 77.8 million Danish crowns (EUR 10.5 mln) versus 17.6 million crowns (EUR 2.4 mln) in the first half of 2001. Operating profit surged from 43.7 million Danish crowns (EUR 5.9 mln) in 2001 to 66.9 million crowns (EUR 9.0 mln) in 2002. Harboes has registered net turnover of 1.17 billion crowns (EUR 157.1 mln) for the first half of 2002, compared to 43.7 million crowns (EUR 5.9 mln) for the same period of 2001. Employment at the brewery fell from 710 to 677.

On August 20, Oyj Hartwall announced that it had appointed the Swedish brewery AB Abro Bryggeri as the new distributor of Hartwall’s Lapin Kulta beer in Sweden. AB Abro Bryggeri will manage the importation, distribution, sales and operational marketing of Lapin Kulta beer in Sweden, the leading import-beer in the country. "Hartwall changed its (Swedish) importer at the behest of the Finnish and Swedish competition authorities when the Carlsberg Breweries brewing company was formed. Among the requirements set by the competition authorities was that the distribution agreement for Lapin Kulta beer in Sweden had to be separated out from the operations of Hartwall's main competitor, Carlsberg Breweries," Hartwall said in a statement.

The Industrial group European Drinks announced their intention to spend at least US$ 40 million in Romanian beer industry, Interfax reported. The same source reveals that European Drinks have recently signed a contract of about EUR 30 million with Germany’s Krones, one of the largest beer production lines in the world, for building a new brewery in Oradea, Romania. The brewery is expecting to produce over 1 million hectolitres per year. The Romanian beer market is estimated at US$ 500 million a year, and its output is about 12 million hectolitres a year. The main Romanian beer producers are Ursus and Ciuc, which produce 1 million and 1.5 million hectolitres respectively.
