1. Industry news

Baltic Beverage Holding (BBH), a joint venture of Carlsberg and Scottish & Newcastle (S&N), intends to sell its stake in the Russian brewery, Voronezh, to Yarpivo, a subsidiary of BBH, in order to simplify the company’s structure, Carsberg reported. Voronezh is 83%-owned by BBH (Baltic Beverages Holding), which in turn controls 60% of Yarpivo.

The third largest brewer in the world, the Dutch brewer, Heineken, has reported that it is setting up a separate mergers and acquisitions division as part of its corporate restructuring. A spokesperson for the Dutch brewing conglomerate said that the move was aimed at ensuring a strong financial and operational performance. Heineken plans to bring together expertise from its different operating companies and corporate departments into one department, to optimize knowledge-sharing, the company said.

According to a statement by the Czech brewer, Budejovicky Budvar (BB), the EU has granted protection to geographically defined designations of beer brewed in the city of Ceske Budejovice, Budejovicky Pivo and Ceskobudejovicky Pivo, as part of the Czech Republic's accession agreement with the EU. In response the statement, Anheuser-Busch, the US brewing group which has contested numerous legal battles with Budejovicky Budvar over the use of the Bud and Budweiser names, said: "We are pleased that the accession treaty between the Czech Republic and the EU contains specific and unprecedented language that protects our established rights to the Budweiser and Bud brand names in EU countries.

The Belgian giant brewer, Interbrew, has reported its intention to reorganise its distribution network Belgium in order to cut costs and improve efficiency. The company expects the measures to have a "positive influence" on its results in less than two years. "The pay back period is less than two years,” Interbrew said. The reorganisation, which it expects to complete by the end of 2003, would involve the loss of 27 jobs, which had already been made provision for in the group's 2002 accounts, the company added.

BELHAVEN, the East Lothian-based brewer, reported its seventh consecutive set of record results today, with a 20.2 per cent increase in first-half profits and the promise of more to come. Belhaven, Scotland's largest regional brewer, recently began advertising Best on television for the first time, and the firm claimed independent market research had positioned itself as the country's leading ale brand in the pubs trade. Chief executive Stuart Ross said: "We work constantly to innovate our support of Best both in the media and at point of sale. "Initiatives in the second half of the year will include extended distribution of branded glassware, branded bar counter bottle openers, an attractive new beer tap handle and an updated can design."
