1. Industry news

"Carlsberg Breweries A/S has sold the company Rent a Cooler Denmark A/S to Eden Springs Ltd., which is the European leader within marketing of still water in plastic dispensers for offices,” the company said. “The sale is part of Carlsberg Breweries' strategy to concentrate on its core business – the production and sale of beer and own soft drinks. ” “Rent a Cooler Denmark has 32 employees and a turnover of approx. DKK 30 million. The company supplies still water in 19 litres plastic dispensers and ½ litre bottles primarily to companies all over Denmark. Delivery takes place in co-operation with e.g. the wholesaler of Cafax coffee.”

Kirin Brewery Co Ltd will introduce two new beers in Japan this March - the "Blue Label" beer and the low-malt "Namakuro" -- which are expected to boost sales by 2.0 million and 2.4 million cases respectively, Reuters reported. “The company has to stop competing on price, and referred to a damaging domestic price war last June that cut the price of low-malt beer by 10 yen a can,” Hideo Chida, Kirin managing director said. "We realize there is a strong interest in low prices. But we have to produce value added products that will convince consumers to pay more."...... more info

The Danish brewing force, Carlsberg, has increased its stake in the Bulgarian brewer, Pirinsko Pivo, from 67.17% to 94.5%. “In August 2002, Carlsberg Breweries acquired 67 per cent of the Bulgarian brewery Pirinsko Pivo. In accordance with Bulgarian legislation, Carlsberg Breweries as majority shareholder has made a public offer for the remaining share capital. As a result of the public offer, Carlsberg Breweries will acquire additional holdings of 27.5 per cent at a price of DKK 28 million (Euro 3.8 million). The acquisition brings the total shareholding to 94.5 per cent,” the company said.

Japanese beer and spirits group, Suntory, intends to increase domestic beer sales by 6% to 61m cases in the fiscal year to the end of December. But the company also anticipates that the tax increase on low-malt "happoshu" brands will slow down growth in that segment. In spite of the negative effects of the tax hike, Suntory said that the strength of its "Super Magnum Dry" and "Diet" low-malt beer brands would allow it to achieve the forecast sales growth.

The Belgian brewing force, Interbrew, intends to raise the beer prices on its domestic market by 2.5%, as a result of malt prices surging during the third quarter of last year. Guy Dewulf, a spokesman for Interbrew's Belgian division said: "Malt prices increased by more than 20% between July and October as droughts in the U.S. and Australia created a worldwide shortage.” The price of malt may also affect the global price of beer but Dewulf said he could only comment on the impact for Interbrew's domestic operations. The company did not rule out further increases in beer prices if malt costs continued to escalate.
