Turkish brewer Anadolu Efes Beverages Group bought Moldova's biggest brewer, Vitanta-Intravest. The deal could be realised after January 13, 2003 when the tender offered by "Efes Breweries International B.V.", a subsidiary of "Efes Beverage Group" based in Holland, expired. The value of deal comes to 167.56 million lei (US$11.97 million), an official at Moldova's National Securities Commission said. One of the top drinks companies in Latin America, the Mexican Fomento Economico Mexicano (Femsa),a 112-year-old brewery, has denied plans to sell off its brewing subsidiary, which produces the Tecate and Dos Equis beer brands. Femsa stated that “reports and speculation the Monterrey-based firms wanted to offload its cornerstone beer division and focus on its Coke bottling business were "totally false". But analysts do not rule out a bid by an international beer giant such as Dutch brewer Heineken or Belgian-based Interbrew given global brewery consolidation trends and the attractiveness of the lucrative Mexican market, Reuters reported...... more info

Filipino beer producers are campaigning against the decision by the country's president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to impose further "sin taxes" on beer in forthcoming tax adjustments. Beer producers argued that they were already among the country's biggest taxpayers and that the government needs to look elsewhere to raise funds for public spending. The calls have been led by food and beverage giant San Miguel which said it paid more than P10 billion in excise taxes annually. It is arguing that the rises will hurt consumption and be at the expense of the poorer consumer. Prices will rise at the expense of poor consumers...... more info

Belarus restricted the import of the Russian beer. While politicians and officials spend their time, thinking over budget problems and other virtual details of the Unified State of Russia and Belarus, Russian producers think, what is the best thing to do with the abundance of cheap Byelorussian goods on the Russian market. We have the Russian Transport Union, the Fuel Union, even the Book Union. All lobbyist needs are focused in an adequate union, which allows its leadership to lobby the interests of an industrial branch in the government, parliament and local authorities. The Union of Russian Brewers - wrote a letter to Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov to introduce measures to limit beer imports into Russia from Belarus...more info

Beer production in Ukraine may grow by 5.33-6.7% up to 158-160 million decalitres in 2003 compared to 2002 year, Ukrpyvo, a company that joins the biggest Ukrainian breweries, reported on January 14. Analysts confirm that not great growth of beer production during the current year will be due to the saturation of domestic market. According to a research there was registered the highest level of beer production in Ukraine during 2002 year – about 150 million decalitres of beer, a figure registered last time in 1995 year. During 2001 Ukrainian beer makers produced 127.38 million decalitres of beer – 21.8% more than in previous year. The analysts estimated the volume of Ukrainian beer market to be about 150 million decalitres per year...more info
