  • 2. Industry news

American Malting Barley Association Inc. has reported that US barley production for 2002 year is estimated at 226.873 million bushels (4.94 million metric tons) – down 9 % from last year's estimate. This year's production is the lowest since 1937. Average yield per acre, at 54.9 bushels (1.195 metric tons), is down 3.3 bushels (0.072 metric tons) from 2001, the association reported. The area harvested for grain is estimated at 4.14 million acres, 4 percent below a year ago, and is the lowest level since 1898. North Dakota is the state with the largest production of barley of about 57.04 million bushels (1.242 million metric tons) after which comes the state Idaho with 53.96 million bushels (1.175 million metric tons)... more info

EU: Estimates of the barley acreage in 2003 range from 10,4 to 10,55 mill. ha, of which 6 mill. ha spring barley. Both figures are virtually unchanged from 2002. Increases of 40-50.000 Ha each in Germany and the U.K. are likely to be compensated by a drop of 90.000 Ha in Denmark. Winter started with heavy precipitation all over the Continent and inundations, especially in France and Germany. In January it was followed by a frost wave with little or no snowcover. Winter kill is reported from France, where the crop of Esterel barley has been badly affected. Also England and East Germany report some damages. In general winter kill leads to smaller overall crops, however, reseeding in spring may boost the acreage of spring barley. Private estimates of an EU barley crop of 47,5 to 49,5 Mill. tons (versus 48,2 Mill. in 2002) are hardly more than guesses at this time. Eastern Europe: Winter in Russia, Ukraine and Scandinavia has been much colder than in all recent years. Ports in the Northern and Eastern Baltic Sea as well as in the Sea of Azov are ice-bound. Snowcover, which is sufficient by now in Eastern Europe, had been negligible, when frost temperatures set in... more info

The Austrian beer and drinks group, Oesterreichische Brau Beteiligungs AG (BBAG), the holding company for Brau Union AG, has reported preliminary sales for 2002 of €1.117 million, up 1.1% from 2001. Adjusting for the reduced beer taxes in Romania, net sales increased by 2.8% to € 920 million. The beer division contributed with 89% to the total sales. Beer sales volumes rose by 1% surpass the 13 million hectoliter threshold for the first time. Gösser volume rose by 5.8%, mainly due to the Romanian start and the more than 100% increase of the license production in Russia. Kaiser was 4.7% below last year's volumes. This performance coincides with the strong growth of the Hungarian brand "Soproni Àszok". Zipfer was able to increase its position in Austria as well as in the Italian export business and grew by 1.9% in total. With 4.9% Starobrno posted gains in the Czech market as well is in the export business in Sweden and the Slovak Republic. BBAG has said that it is aiming to become the leading brewing force in Central Europe in 2003 and with this aim in mind has recently begun talks with possible strategic partners for the region.

SABMiller plc, the world’s second largest brewer, reported in a statement on February 04, that its subsidiary in Poland, Kompania Piwowarska S.A. (KP) will acquire a 98.8% stake in the Polish brewer Browar Dojlidy Sp. z o.o. (Dojlidy) and an outstanding shareholder loan from Radeberger Gruppe AG for a cash consideration of EUR 35.15 million (about US$37.89 million). The acquisition is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of a due diligence review by Kompania Piwowarska and the approval of the Polish Office for Protection of Competition and Consumers and the Ministry of Interior. "This acquisition, which further consolidates our operations in Poland, gives us the opportunity to grow Dojlidy's core brands across our existing distribution platform. It builds on our strategy of optimising and expanding our established positions in developing markets and we anticipate additional benefits, such as procurement and distribution synergies, from integrating the business into KP,'' Graham Mackay, Chief Executive of SABMiller said... more info

Ukraine may import more caramel malt in 2003, the Ukrainian analysts reported. According to Galina Korenikova, the assistant director of ZAO “Ukrpivo”, Ukraine doesn’t produce caramel malt but its demand comes up to 8-9 thousand tons per annum. As the request for dark beer went up this year, a rise of its production is forecasted, that will drive to a rise of caramel malt import, Galina Korenikova said. The import of barley malt will remain at the same level – of about 50 thousand ton. However analysts predict a poor crop of barley while 350 thousand tons of barley are necessary to produce the needed malt at a medium harvest of 10 million tons. In 2002 Ukraine produced about 173.301 thousand tons of malt – 20.5 thousand tons more than in 2001.
