2. Industry news
Ukrainian analysts are forecasting a noticeable rise of malt imports in 2003. This is connected with an expected increase in beer output; low quality of Ukrainian malt and the predicted fall of 2003 barley crop. Ukraine might import about 50 thousand tons of malt in 2003, the figure that may go up due to the bad barley harvest. First of all, caramel malt imports are to grow, as an increase in dark beer output is expected due to the demand rise for this product. Ukraine does not produce caramel malt at all. The value of malt imports totaled 44.219 thousand tons in 2002 for US$9.739 million, 10.9% or with 5.423 thousand tons less in comparison with 2001 year. Ukraine produced 173.301 thousand tons of malt in 2002, 13.5% or with 20.551 tons more than in 2001. Analysts estimate the demand in malt of breweries to be about 120 thousand tons per year.

One of the largest malting houses in the world, French Groupe Soufflet, intends to purchase the Hungarian Nagykanizsa brewery of Dreher Rt, owned by South Africa's SABMiller, according to Hungary’s media and AgraFood East Europe. With registered capital of Ft 3,5bn, the French firm funded a venture in Hungary in 1998, which leased the malting factory of the Nagykanizsa brewery from Dreher. The contract was due to terminate this September, but Dreher agreed to sell unit to Soufflet. The price of the deal was not disclosed. The French firm is said to be considering setting up a major European malting facility at the site.
Beer trade between Russia and Byelorussia is entering a next round of opposing owing to the Byelorussian government, beer-union.com reported. On 19 February the Byelorussian Council of Ministers has approved resolution No. 208 Regulation of Imports and sales in the Byelorussian Republic of Malt Beer Originated in the Customs Union Member-States That Enjoy Customs-Free Procedures. Such a long resolution title implies the only one country, which is Russia. The resolution is against the Russian imports. The CIS countries (that are Members to the Customs Union) that are capable of beer importation to Byelorussia Russia is the only state that enjoys customs-free procedures...more info
Prazske Pivovary, the second largest Czech brewer, has reported that it is to delist its shares from public markets after its owner, Belgium's Interbrew, accumulated almost all of its stock. According to a spokeswoman of Praszke, Interbrew now controls 99.6% of the company.
The move completes a lengthy financial restructuring under the Belgian parent, which has helped nurse Prazske Pivovary back to health. It posted a 75 million crown ($2.55 million) net profit last year after a string of losses in previous years.
The delisting of Prazske's shares has yet to receive formal approval by the company's shareholders who are due to meet for an extraordinary general meeting on April 2.
Czech brewers exported about 1.975 million hl of beer in 2002, up 6.47% from 1.855 million hl in 2001, according to the Czech Brewing and Malting Association. The result is the highest since 1993, sources reported. These record volumes are due to the fact that foreign owners of Czech brewers had included Czech beers among their flagship brands, Jan Vesely, the associations's chairman said. "SABMiller said its strongest brand worldwide is Pilsner Urquell." The Belgian brewing group, Interbrew, includes Staropramen, brewed by its Prazske Pivovary subsidiary, among its six leading brands.
Total beer production in the Czech Republic rose by 1.7% to 18.177 million hl in 2002. Beer consumption per capita increased from 156 litres to 160 litres.
