  • 2. Brewery News

Carlsberg Breweries A/S has started negotiations with Yasar Holding AS to acquire the Yasar Group's 12.1% stake in Türk Tuborg. If the negotiations result in an agreement, Carlsberg Breweries will subsequently own 95.3% of the company. Any agreement is subject to approval by Turkish authorities. Carlsberg Breweries became the majority shareholder in July 2001 by acquiring 50.01% of the share capital and has since then through increases in the share capital and public offers increased its ownership share to 83.2%. Türk Tuborg was founded in Izmir in 1967 as a joint venture between Carlsberg and Yasar Holding and it was the first Tuborg brewery outside Denmark. Türk Tuborg has an annual capacity of 3 million hl.

The European Brewer’s Union discussed on May 27, 2003 about involving in its activity the Estonian Brewing Union. The discussion was held at the biggest Estonian brewer Saku Õlletehas. According to the European Brewer’s Union 25% of beer in the world is produced by EU countries, where about 1650 plants are brewing beer and are engaging around 3.8 million workers.

Ukrainian brewing force ZAO Obolon produced 174.84 million litres of beer in the first 5 months of the year, 13.1% or with 20.25 million litres more than for the same period 2002. ZAO Oboloni was created in 1993 on the base of Kiev-based brewer Obolon after its privatization. In 2002 the plant produced 389 million litres of beer, 11.2% more than a year earlier.

Recently it was reported business in EU of 2 thousand tons 2RS malt, bulk in container to Namibia at around EUR 270-275 and 2 thousand tons 50/50 mix 2RS/6RW in bulk to Nicaragua at about EUR 255 both FOB. Russia started new crop purchases: 60 thousand tons were reported at undisclosed prices. Japan acquired initial new crop quantities of 2RS malt, bulk in container, at prices around EUR 300 FOB.

    4. Barley News

Russia exported in July 2002/March 2003 2.8 million tons of feed barley against 2.56 million last crop year. In the Ukraine export contracts were registered for 3.055 million tons between July 1, 2002, and May 21, 2003. Last crop year total registrations were 2.824 million tons. Crop prospects are poor in both countries, after massive winterkill, followed by dryness and warm temperatures in spring. The state of crops is worse in the southern parts of both countries, while in the North and West of the Ukraine and in the Black Soil region of Russia there is hope for fair crops. In the CEEC May rains helped in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but the crops will be the worst since years in all Balkan states. Figures are changing constantly and are therefore not mentioned here, but the eastern half of Europe will lose most of its export potential and will need imports of quality grains.

Canadian barley stocks on March 31 2003 were 3.27 million tons against 6.175 a year ago. U.S./Canadian maltsters resold at least 50.000 tons of EU malting barley and tried to sell more. It was bought last fall as a hedge against the poor outcome of the Canadian crop, but it turns out now that the North American maltsters can find enough local barley of adequate quality to carry them through to the next crop. Moisture conditions have improved, planting is slow and there had been local frost damage in the middle of the month, but crop prospects are, of course, much better than in 2002.
