Different Phenolic Compounds Activate Distinct Human Bitter Taste Receptors

ABSTRACT
In 2009, German researchers found that the responsible sensory bitter receptors for alpha, iso-alpha acids and beta acids are the receptors hTAS2R1, hTAS2R14 and hTAS2R40, reacting with the different bitter acids. Another German team of researchers were also able to determine the bitter receptors reacting with different plant polyphenols, namely the receptors hTAS2R4, hTAS2R5, hTAS2R7, hTAS2R39. With this they also discovered that some of the individual thresholds of the polyphenolic substances are extremely low. So maybe there are very bitter polyphenolic substances also in beer we have not discovered so far.

Brewery news USA: Craft beer sector seen as serious threat to Molson Coors profitability
Big beer is in trouble. For decades, Amercians were content to drink watered-down beer so long as it was a brand they recognized. However, more and more Americans are starting to care what their alcoholic beverages taste like, thus giving rise to the domestic craft beer industry and lowering sales of past American favorites like Anheuser-Busch InBev NV's Budweiser, Insider Monkey reported on May, 22.

Although the craft beer industry poses a major threat to its business, Molson Coors Brewing Company is likely to thrive despite competitive pressures.

The company is the second-largest North American brewer, with operations concentrated in mature markets. As a result of its relative lack of explosive growth, the company has developed an efficient distribution system and economies of scale. This has allowed Molson Coors Brewing Company to earn double-digit operating margins in each of the last six years.

One reason investors have shied away from the stock is due to the controlling stakes of the Molson Coors Brewing Company families. However, closely-held companies often focus on creating long-term shareholder value rather than pursuing strategies that boost the stock price only temporarily; as a result, capital allocation will likely be in the best interest of long-term shareholders.

Molson Coors faces ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Exports of US made craft beers expand across the world
American-made craft beer is entering its heyday in America - dozens of other countries might be buying that same craft beer, too, US News reported on May, 17.

The Brewers Association tells that American craft beer export volumes climbed by an incredible 72 percent in 2012 over the previous year. U.S.-made craft beer – from breweries such as Boston Brewing Company, DC Brau, or New Belgium Brewing that produce fewer than 6 mln barrels of beer a year – is today on store shelves in countries like Sweden and Canada. Sweden has embraced light lager alternatives to the domestic beers from Spendrups and Carlsberg that have dominated their shelves for years, while Canada has fallen in love with America's hoppy beers.

Much of the credit can go to the Department of Agriculture, which through its Market Access Program has given the Brewers Association an average of $400,000 annually for the past four years to help get its craft beers abroad.

"What we do with that money is we try to establish a relationship," says Bob Pease, chief operating officer of the Brewers Association.

Agriculture Department spokeswoman Sally Klusaritz says market access funds were also used to familiarize importers in countries including Germany, Taiwan and ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Heineken not to launch female-oriented Radler beer in Kenya
Heineken will not be launching its sweeter, low-alcohol Radler beer in Kenya. It will instead focus on its flagship brand to grow local market share, Business Daily reported on May, 21.

The Dutch brewer, which set up in Kenya in 2011, says it will use Heineken beer brand to reduce the dominance of East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL), especially in the premium category.

The firm is wooing female African drinkers with Radler, a beer made from malt and lemon, to grow market share in a continent dominated by rivals SAB Miller and Diageo — which has majority shares in EABL.

“Radler is not and will not be launched in Kenya,” said the brewer’s general manager East Africa, Koen Morshuis, in an e-mail interview. “Within the East African market Heineken is only focusing on its flagship brand Heineken.”

East African market is increasingly becoming a battle zone between SABMiller and Diageo as both firm’s race to grow their regional footprint.

The number three global brewer, Heineken, has been a late entrant into the region after opening the regional headquarters in Nairobi in 2011.

The headquarters is in charge of marketing while distribution is handled by Maxam Ltd, which is associated with businessman Ngugi Kiuna who has ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Guinness Black Lager Beer launched in Canada

In stores now, GUINNESS Black Lager Beer promises all of the character that GUINNESS beer drinkers have come to love, but with a refreshing new taste available instantly with the pop of a bottle cap. The new GUINNESS Black Lager combines the roasted barley flavour that GUINNESS Draught is famous for with a crisp new approach and marks an exciting new addition to the over 250 year old GUINNESS family of beers, Sacramento Bee reported on May, 21.

"With GUINNESS Black Lager we really wanted to build on all the elements that people love about the GUINNESS brand. We take immense pride in the quality of our product and ensured that we built on the GUINNESS brewing legacy when creating this distinctive and refreshing lager. I have no doubt that GUINNESS and lager fans alike will enjoy this unique tasting new lager," said GUINNESS Master Brewer Fergal Murray.

"It's not every day that a company with over 250 years of experience brewing the world's finest stout introduces a new beer, and we are excited to be bringing GUINNESS Black Lager to Canada," said ...More info on site
