Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands introducing Bloody Mary-style beer
Constellation Brands says it is introducing a Bloody Mary-style beer in the US as it seeks to exploit a “pretty large category” currently dominated by one player, BeverageDaily.com reported on July, 3.

During an investor call to discuss the company’s results (announced earlier this week), Lauren Torres from HSBC asked CEO Robert Sands what could be “done differently in beer” now it had full ownership of Grupo Modelo’s US beer business.

Constellation completed its acquisition of Grupo Modelo’s US beer business from AB InBev on June, 7 for $4.75 bln.

The deal includes a large-scale brewery in Piedras Negras, full ownership (the other 50%) of the import business for brands including Corona, Crown Holdings, and a permanent license to sell these brands in the US.

Sands said the acquisition had added “an entirely new dimension to our company”, and told analysts that Constellation was most excited about opportunities for innovation and NPD in beer.

The company had already introduced and was test marketing Modelo Especial Lite in the US, he said, adding that it plans to introduce Modelo Especial Chelado, a Bloody Mary-style beer, in the US.

This is a tomato, salt and lime-flavoured 3.5% brew, he said. “The pretty large category” of such beers, he ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Two new spring barley varieties seen as suitable for malt distilling and brewing
The high yielding variety Odyssey has been awarded the prestigious accolade of full approval for malt distilling use, and has been granted Provisional Approval 2 for brewing, Farming UK reported on July, 4.

Overture, also from the Limagrain breeding line, has been granted Provisional Approval 2 for both brewing and malt distilling.

This is very good news for spring malting barley growers who have already demonstrated their commitment in the varieties since their launch in in 2011. Odyssey in particular has seen strong interest from the market place offering a 6% yield increase over the benchmark variety, Concerto.

“Both Odyssey and Overture are bred from the Concerto line; Concerto is the only UK spring malting barley variety which holds IBD approval for both distilling and malting, and also French CBMO approval. In fact, Concerto’s consistent quality, high yield and across the board market acceptance have seen it termed the ‘new Optic’ by the industry,” says Mark Glew senior barley breeder for Limagrain.

“We are particularly excited about the interest being shown in Odyssey, and do believe that this ‘son of Concerto’ has the potential to be as big a variety as Concerto in the future.”

With the sound genetics of Concerto crossed with Quench ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Australian Research Council launches project to improve malting barley varieties
More than A$2.9 million will be spent on improving malting barley varieties through a joint Australian Research Council Linkage Project between the University of Adelaide, the University of Western Australia, Viterra and Carlsberg, New Queensland Register reported on July, 4.

ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls director Geoff Fincher says the collaborative venture will help to address the growing energy and water costs that maltsters and brewers face when converting barley to beer.

The program started on Monday, July, 1.

"One of the central objectives of this program is to produce barley varieties with a low-input requirement in the malthouse and brewery," he said.

"We want to produce varieties that consume less water and less energy to address these growing costs.

"If you can cut the industry's powerbill by x per cent, that equals x more profit and x less carbon footprint. That really is an important part of the project."

Prof Fincher said project funding included cash and in-kind contributions from all parties.

He said an important element of the project was to get academic institutions and research groups interacting with industry.

"It's all about the translation of fundamental science into the real world of industry and commerce," he said.

"Our partners wish to define genetic ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & India: Diageo close to completing the acquisition of the majority stake in United Spirits
UK drinks group Diageo's $2.1 billion deal to acquire a majority stake in Vijay Mallya promoted United Spirits is in the last lap of completion, NDTV cited undisclosed sources on July, 4. Two of the three stages of the deal, announced in November 2012, have already been completed, the sources added.

Diageo's Rs. 5,441-crore open offer for acquiring 26 per cent stake in United Spirits elicited a tepid response from investors because the tender price of Rs. 1,440 per piece was much lower than the market price.

Of 3.8 crore shares of United Spirits that were on offer, shareholders tendered just 64,169 shares and only 58,688 shares were accepted, according to a regulatory filing. The open offer began on April 10 and closed on April 26.

Diageo's failure to buy outright control of United Spirits through the open offer will, however, not impact the company's control over management. That's because under deal terms announced in November, Mr Mallya's United Breweries Holdings, which owns a United Spirits stake, would vote with Diageo on decisions for four years.

The second stage was completed in the last week of May. United Spirits approved the allotment of 14.5 million shares on a preferential (at Rs. 1,440 per share) ...More info on site
