1. Industry news

Sleeman Breweries is establishing a new company in Quebec, La Brasserie Sleeman du Quebec, in order to develop the company’s sales in the province. The decision was taken after the rising demand for Sleeman’s brand in Quebec. La brasserie Sleeman du Quebec will be headed up by a separate team dedicated to the Quebec operation, under the direction of managing director, Guy J. Letourneau. Thus the new brewery will be wholly owned by Sleeman Breweries.

Japan's second-ranked brewing force, Kirin Brewery Co Ltd, has reported on January 23 that was likely to beat its net profit forecast of 26 billion yen ($220 million) for 2002 made last August, according to Reuters. A Kirin spokesman made the comments following a report in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun that the brewer was likely to post a 38 percent year-on-year rise in group net profit to 32 billion yen for the year ended in December. "There is a high probability that we will surpass our forecast for net profit," spokesman Tomonori Ono said. Kirin could not give an exact figure for its profit outlook, but that the newspaper's assessment was not far off, the company said. Kirin had cut its group net profit forecast for calendar 2002 in August to 26 billion yen from 29 billion yen due to fierce competition and falling revenues amid price-cutting....more info

Carlsberg Asia has acquired through its subsidiary Carlsberg Brewery Hong Kong Ltd. the entire share capital of the third Chinese brewery Kunming Huashi Brewery Company Ltd. from the Zhejiang K.K. Group, the Danish brewer Carlsberg A/S reported on January 23. The acquisition is subject to the approval of Chinese authorities. The Chinese brewery is situated in Kunming, the biggest city of the Yunnan province in the south western part of China, bordering Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. The Kunming brewery has about 600 employees and a capacity of 600,000 hl beer, which provide growth possibilities in a province with a population of 43 million with a yearly per capita beer consumption of only 4.2 litres. The average per capita consumption in China is 18 litres. The Yunnan province is developing a tourist industry which also increases the possibilities of boosting beer consumption.... more info

Austrian drinks force BBAG Group is looking out for a strategic partner to help it become Central Europe's largest brewer. BBAG, which makes and distributes Goesser and Zipfer beers, has acquired 14 breweries abroad since 1991. The company is market leader in Austria and Romania and is among the top three in Hungary. The firm said it had already invited possible partners to submit concrete proposals and added a partnership would include all of its divisions, notably beer, non-alcoholic beverages and real estate. "Undoubtedly, all of the major brewers should be interested in such a deal. Synergies range from €15 per share for Carlsberg, virtually zero for Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) and €35 for SAB and Heineken," WestLB Panmure beverage analyst Stuart Price said. “There could be regulatory issues in Hungary only (where Interbrew, SAB, and BBAG have similar market shares. Though the exact form of the strategic alliance is very much open, the danger is that BBAG may want equity - as did the Hartwall family with S&N,” he added.... more info

BBH's managing director, Christian Ramm-Schimdt, has anounced that Baltic Beverages Holding plans to invest about US$ 100 million in its private breweries “Slavutich” (Zaporozhye, Ukraine) and “Irbis” (Kazakhstan). The majority of the investment is to be made in upgrading and expanding production facilities. Baltic Beverage Holding (BBH) is a brewing group jointly owned by Carlsberg and Scottish & Newcastle.
