Burkina Faso has provided financial support to state-owned brewer Société Nouvelle Brasserie du Faso (SN Brafaso) as the company seeks to expand production capacity and compete in the country’s increasingly competitive beer market, Ecofin Agency reported on July 7.

The Burkinabe government signed a financing agreement worth CFA30 billion ($52.3 million) with SN Brafaso on July 6, 2026. According to a statement from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the government will finance the project through funds raised under the Diaspora Bond known as “Patriotic Loan”, which targeted Burkinabe citizens at home and abroad. The funding will support SN Brafaso’s expansion strategy. In January, the government approved the construction of the company’s second beer production facility at Léguéma, in the municipality of Bobo-Dioulasso.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the future plant’s production capacity or the total investment required for the project.

SN Brafaso remains a relatively recent player in Burkina Faso’s brewing industry. The company officially resumed operations on November 25 after a 17-year shutdown. SN Brafaso originally launched in 2004, stopped operations in 2008 and returned under state ownership in 2012 after the government acquired it for CFA40 billion.

The company began its rehabilitation process in March 2024 with an initial investment of CFA17.9 billion. SN Brafaso operates its first production facility in Komsilga, near Ouagadougou. The plant has an installed production capacity of 600,000 hectolitres per year and produces the Braf’or and Brafaso beer brands. With the planned Bobo-Dioulasso facility, authorities aim to expand the company’s national footprint and increase its ability to meet domestic demand.

The expansion comes as competition intensifies in Burkina Faso’s beer industry. Historical market leader Brakina, a subsidiary of the Castel Group, dominates the sector. Meanwhile, Libs Brasserie Sarl has expanded its presence since 2019 with a production unit located in Gampéla, near Ouagadougou.

According to data from consulting firm BarthHaas, Burkina Faso produced around 3.1 million hectolitres of beer in 2024, ranking second in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) behind Côte d’Ivoire, which produced 4.8 million hectolitres.

Despite strong domestic production, Burkina Faso continues to import beer, creating additional growth opportunities for local producers. Data from the National Institute of Statistics shows that the country imported an average of CFA3.6 billion ($6.2 million) worth of beer annually between 2020 and 2024.
