Barley news

The North Dakota Field Office of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service recently released the top-seeded varieties for wheat and barley in the state, Farm & Ranch Guide wrote on August 1.

For the third straight year, Tradition, with 37.4 percent of the 1.50 million acres planted, was the top seeded barley variety in North Dakota.

Lacey was the second most popular variety with 17.6 percent of the acres. Coming in at third place with 10.6 percent of the acres was Stellar-ND, while Conlon was fourth with 10.2 percent; Legacy was fifth with 6.3 percent; Robust sixth accounting for 5.2 percent and Drummond seventh with 1.9 percent.

The top seven barley varieties are all recommended for malting by the American Malting Barley Association and account for 89.2 percent of this year's barley acres in the state.

Haybet, representing 1.4 percent of the total acres, is the top feed variety for the sixth consecutive year and ranks eighth overall. Logan and Excel were two other feed barley varieties that made the top ten with 0.5 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

The barley figures were compiled from surveys of barley growers taken during June and July, with funding coming from the N.D. Barley Council and the American Malting Barley Association.
