Brewery news

Woodland's long-awaited Black Dragon Brewery won't open until January but Woodland home brewers can get everything they need to start brewing today without leaving the city limits, Daily Democrat reported on November, 12.

Woodland Homebrew Supply Shop opened at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 as the first half of a comprehensive beer vision shared by the husband and wife team of Jason and Heather Breatt. When the future Black Dragon Brewery opens in the same room, the Breatts say it will make for a nearly one-of-a-kind combination.

But while they wait, Woodlanders can pick up everything they need to start brewing in one trip, from grains to yeast to fermentation equipment and self-contained starter kits, Jason Breatt said.

A Facebook announcement and word of mouth attracted about a dozen visitors within the first hour alone, he said.

The opening marks a milestone for the Breatts, who first obtained permission from the city's Planning Commission in April and spent the intervening months preparing the store.

The result, more than a decade after the couple first brewed their own beer at home, is Yolo County's sole home brew supply store.

"It's like wedding day," Jason Breatt said. "It's like a dream come true."

Jason Breatt, himself a graduate of the American Brewers Guild who once estimated he's taught home brewing classes to about 1,000 students, said he'll continue that tradition by offering home brew classes in Woodland, with a schedule to be determined by the class demand.
