Brewery news

Village Brewery opened in Calgary and it’s serving blonde and dark ales, Calgary Sun reported on March, 2.

As its name suggests, Village Brewery aims to be a beer business that’s not just about the beverage, but also about the community.

Jim Button, one of the six founders of the new micro-brewery, said the biggest thing for him is the community side of their business.

The six founders recruited 30 Calgarians who are already entrenched in community-based endeavours.

Button, who worked for Big Rock as a marketing executive, said the new business venture is geared towards being an active part of a vibrant Calgary.

“We are truly doing this to be a big part of the community,” he said.

He said 10% of the company’s net earnings are going back to the arts community in the hope of helping creative people pursue their passions.

They’ve started helping local folks and commissioned artists to craft dozens of individually designed beer glasses, each marked with the letter V.

The brewery started about 18 months ago.

Brewing equipment was put in place last September at their location and production began soon after.

Their Village Blonde, a natural golden ale, and the Village Blacksmith, an India black ale, are already on tap at pubs in the city and have been since December.

Both ales are also available in a 1.89-litre growler from various city liquor stores.

The brewery is currently perfecting its third beer, which is going to be a spring/summer drink made mostly from wheat.

They don’t have a name for the brew yet, but Button joked it could be called the Village Nit Wheat or the Village Half Wheat.
