Upstate Brewing in Horseheads is looking to expand its brewing operation and build a new tap room, The Leader reported on June 29.

The Town of Horseheads’ planning board will review site plans for the expansion when it meets at 7 p.m. on July 2.

The craft brewery, located 3028 Lake Road, plans to add space for three or four new brewing tanks and build a larger, nicer tap room for beer tastings, said Mark Neumann, who owns Upstate Brewing along with Ken Mortensen.

“We wanted to increase production,” Neumann said. “We’re going into Wegmans and a few other new places with our cans, and business has been far outpacing production.”

Upstate Brewing opened in 2012 with two beers, Common Sense Kentucky Common Ale and India Pale Wheat, and rapidly expanded distribution to Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, New York City and other areas.

Upstate also brews four rotating seasonal beers and are working on adding a third year-round beer, Neumann said.

If the planning board approves the project, work on the expansion would likely begin in August, Neumann said.
