Germany, Nuremberg: Top honours for the best wheat beer in the world have gone to a Ukrainian brewery that got its know-how from Germany, the German brewing industry publication Brauwelt reported May 26. The newsletter published in Nuremberg, Germany said the Radomyschl brewery, based west of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, won the gold medal in the category for wheat beers at a prestigious international competition in London. The report noted that the Radomyschl brewers were aided by experts from the brewing academy Doemens, located just outside the southern German city of Munich, in developing a wheat beer for the Ukrainian market. "It is a complex beer with an intense aroma," the jury at the prestigious "Brewing Industry International Awards" at the Guildhall in London said.

The German wheat beer "Schneider Weisse Original" won the silver medal, with the bronze medal going to the Baltika brewery in St. Petersburg, Russia. That brewery as well got help from a southern German brewery, Weihenstephan, in developing a wheat beer. The report said a total of 822 beers from 48 countries were entered in this year's competition, which was first held in 1886.
