Czech men have raised beer consumption by a quarter of a litre to 8.3 half-a-litre beers a week this year, according to a survey that centre CVVM made in September among 953 people aged over 18 who drink beer at least sometimes, Jiří Vinopal of CVVM said at a press meeting on November 24.

Czech women drink 2.5 beers a week on average this year, 0.1 litre more than in 2014.

According to data from the Czech Association of Breweries and Malt Houses (ČSPS), beer production in the Czech Republic dropped by 2 percent in the first eight months of this year.

Beer in the Czech Republic is regularly consumed by 91 percent of men and 56 percent of women. The survey has been conducted in the Czech Republic for 12 years.

“In the long term, the declared beer consumption stagnates or falls moderately by men and grows by women,” Vinopal added.

Women drink beer on average twice a week and men every second day.

Older people drink beer a bit more often. However, the poll shows that the share of people with university education who drink beer is growing. The share has reached 93 percent this year, while in 2004 it stood at around 87 percent. Nearly nine out of ten men and 60 percent of women care what kind of beer they drink.

Beer consumption in the Czech Republic dropped by 2 percent (by 185,000 hectolitres) yr/yr in January-August, while exports increased by 8 percent (by 190,000 hectolitres).

ČSPS data cover around 90 percent of the market. The association ascribes the stagnation in beer consumption mainly to the spring months, while in the summer domestic consumption was at the usual level.

Data from the association show that the trend of outflow of guests from restaurants has not yet reversed. These people now prefer to drink bottled beer at home.

Breweries in the Czech Republic produced 19.65 million hectolitres of beer last year, up 2.3 percent yr/yr. Domestic consumption was flat, while exports grew by 8 percent.

The total domestic beer consumption, including non-alcoholic beer, was at 16.29 million hectolitres last year. This makes 144 litres per capita, the same as in 2013.
