Brewery news

Hopworks Urban Brewery will open its third location and second brewery this fall, probably November, in Vancouver, WA, OregonLive.com reported on July 6.

It will join an upstart but thriving brewing community. At least a dozen breweries in the Vancouver area are taking advantage of the "cheaper real estate, a less intense competitive environment and a thirsty yet underserved community."

The new Hopworks brewery, at 17707 SE Mill Plain Blvd., will be 6,000 square feet and include a restaurant that seats about 300. The brewery will include a 7 barrel brewhouse and will attempt to brew 1,000 barrels in the first year, Hopworks said in a press release.

"The beautiful city of Vancouver has a great sense of community, it's packed with families and people who love craft beer, and it has a rich brewing history," said Hopworks brewmaster and founder, Christian Ettinger, in the release. "We have set out to deepen our roots in the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver has everything we're looking for. We can't wait to start brewing."

Known for its sustainable practices, the brewpub is salmon-safe certified, has a 10 kilowatt solar array and, because it's at the intersection of two bike-laned streets, 177th and Mill Plain, it has ample bike parking. The location will serve beers made only from organic barley malted in Vancouver at Great Western, and a combination of local and organic hops from growers in Washington and Oregon, according to the release.
