Brewery news

Mesa del Sol residents won't need to leave the area for a pint come late 2022, The Business Journals reported on December 22.

Five Mountains Brewing is the first planned, on-site brewery at Mesa del Sol — the emerging housing development and business park just south of the Albuquerque International Sunport. The brewery, started by longtime friends Stephen Stone and Walter Schuler, will open in the Aperture Center in a 4,300-square-foot space at 5700 University Blvd. SE.

The inspiration behind the name comes from mountain ranges to the north, south, east and west, Stone said.

"We plan to be the flagship brewery but hopefully not the last," said Stone, who said he previously worked at Turquoise Trail Brewing before he and Schuler decided to team up for their concept.

Five Mountains will serve its own beer, in addition to beer from local breweries and spirits from distilleries. Stone hopes to have between 20 and 30 different taps for customers to choose from. Five Mountains will also have a prep kitchen to serve sandwiches and coffee.

"We're looking forward to a first-rate operation to complement our many other uses at Mesa del Sol," said David Campbell, CEO of Mesa del Sol LLC.

Those uses include an emerging residential community, growing industries like hemp and technology, and major employers like Fidelity Investments and Netflix. With Netflix expanding at Mesa del Sol,Stone and Schuler hope to capitalize on the thousands of employees that will work on-site. Stone said Five Mountains will look to build out a VIP room to host premiere screenings and other event uses.

Stone and Schuler worked with Resolut RE's Christian File on the deal and signed a lease in November. The two are working with local companies Keenan Construction and Juno Architects for general contracting and architectural services, respectively. They anticipate the buildout to finish in late 2022.

At a presentation at Economic Forum of Albuquerque earlier this year, Campbell said Mesa del Sol has 300 residences with another 400 on the way by April 2022. At full build-out, Campbell estimated Mesa del Sol could have up to 37,500 residences with a population of 100,000 people.

Mesa del Sol LLC owns and controls about 3,000 acres at the development. The other acreage, which totals more than 12,000, at Mesa del Sol is owned by the State Land Office and other public entities.

Resolut RE ranked No. 12 on Business First's List of Commercial Real Estate Firms after reporting $13.35 million in New Mexico commercial transaction value in 2020.
