Brewery news

Strangeways Brewing, a Virginia-based micro-brewery, is one step closer to opening in Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily reported on April 21.

During the City of Williamsburg Planning Commission meeting that was held on April 20, the micro-brewery’s request for a special use permit, PCR#22-006, to operate a restaurant and micro-brewery at 1430-1103 High Street was approved in a 6-0 vote.

The vote also included PCR#22-005, which is a request for a text change in order to allow for a “micro-brewery, micro-distillery, micro-winery and/or micro cidery, with a capacity of not more than 15,000 barrels per year” with a special use permit in the Economic Development ED-2 district.

“In relation to the 15,000 barrels, that is kind of the industry standard,” said Neil Burton, the founder of Strangeways Brewing during the meeting. “We’re not a large production facility in this type of space. Think more of like a tasting room that does make some beer, and we do things within barrels and/or fooders. Fooders are larger vats that are wooden that house the beer.”

“We can ferment from that point on,” Burton added. “We can add adjunct ingredients or other types of ingredients.”

The Williamsburg location will be Strangeways Brewing’s fourth. The company has a presence at two locations in the City of Richmond and one location in Burton’s hometown, Fredricksburg.

The next City of Williamsburg Planning Commission meeting will take place on May 18, 2022.
