The Portuguese brewer, Unicer, has acquired the beer and soft drinks company, Fabrica de Cervejas e Refrigerantes J. Melo Abreu, based in the Azores. The brewer Empresa de Cervejas da Madeira, based on the Madeira Islands, owns J. Melo Abreu.

Unicer has in its portfolio the Cristal, Super Bock, Carlsberg, Cool Beer and Tuborg Strong brands. The company has reported a turnover rise from EUR 334.5 million in 2001 to EUR 379 million in 2002.
