The Arusha Branch of Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) has emerged Brewer of the Year among the South African Breweries (SAB) group in Africa and Asia, Arusha Times posted September 01.

Uganda's Nile Brewery and Mozambique won the second and third positions, respectively.

The director of TBL for North and Eastern Zone, Mr. David Mgwasa said that eleven countries participated in the competitions this year. He mentioned the other countries as Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Zambia. Other countries outside of Africa are India and China.

Attributes which were assessed during the competitions were cost of production, quality of product, workers' performance, reliability and availability of the product.

Mr. Mgwasa explained that the victory of Arusha plant is the result of employees' diligence, competence and commitment. They are generally very highly motivated, he said.

The Arusha plant scored highly also because it uses local raw material - barley grown in Karatu and West Kilimanjaro Areas. The Arusha plant won the prestigious award also in 2003 and 2004.

The Arusha plant accounts for 26% of TBL's market share. According to TBL's public affairs manager, Aggrey Marealle, TBL has embarked on the export of its brands.
